Highly uncool.

You could easily have a bug in there somewhere (or unexpected behaviour when used in other people's environments) that ends up screwing up their machine.

Wasn't there just a security flaw found with git submodules?

Then why ask?

I would say, just set up a remote environment and ssh into it. Either at home or DO or AWS or something.

I agree that in an ideal world everyone would work up to their capacity. However, in an ideal world, people would also be compensated accordingly, and we all know that couldn't be further from the truth most places.

@Larry
I don't really use vim, but you can probably tell it to use a different config directory. That way you can put all your configuration into some temporary folder and run it from there, without touching any of the existing configuration.

Didn't check in detail, but first answer here seems to be doing something along that line:

Yea I should just do something like this.

I was thinking my script was fine for my own purpose but it did seem like the type of thing people would think isn't cool.

I'm very tolerant to anything like that because if something breaks, I find fixing it and learning how to fix it to be very interesting and I always end up learning a lot in situations like that.

It makes me pretty easy going whenever someone feels bad for having inconvenienced me or otherwise ****ed something up that I have to fix. But also makes me less relatable for people who do have attitude about things like that.

I'm gonna figure out a proper solution for the situation where I am ssh'ing into a random box or someone else's computer and want to get it nice and comfy.

@Larry, thats a great use for docker! (id venture installing docker is way less insulting than changing bash configs). And if they dont have docker, **** em!

Larry,

In general, i think it’s bad etiquette to run any scripts on a system that isnt yours without permission.

Of course I will be doing this with permission and people will know what I'm doing.

Yea I'm always going to be doing that, I was just trying to gauge if my personal script could ever be used for non-personal equipment (since I don't really feel like putting more time into this thing atm since its working for me).

I was researching ways to do this earlier and I thought, hmm.. i could string together a few simple commands and I think it would work, and it did, but in a personal-use-only way.

I'm going to try and build a docker image today to get new developers up and running. We have a lot of challenges in setting up all our stuff for new people (one coworker said it's the worst by far of any company he's been at).

I'm gonna go through the standard docs, etc. But if anyone has any particular insight or place to point me to i would greatly appreciate it.

If you can shell script you can dockerfile. Just find the most appropriate base image from docker hub, either an os you like or some software built from an os you like. The syntax is straight forward enough, try to chain appropriate shell commands on one RUN to cache the layer.
The docker run command will take some fiddling, docker-compose is actually pretty good for configuring even just one container to run.

We have changed approach, so this is now sorted.

my old team was this large. we were aware of the size and the related issues and thus payed attention to make sure it was efficient. it was ran well and very rarely went over 15 minutes. on a few occasions, usually when the regular meeting leader wasnt there it was extra long, like 45 minutes.

my new team is large too, and its not even doing scrum. but the project manager goes over everything we are working on in excruciating detail. and its every day. like, my status hasnt changed much. also, you can look in tfs and see what the status of my tasks is.

but I think the worst part is that she has us rehash our story card every single day. oh, and she goes by number and doesnt have the board set up so every person needs to tell her the card number/s.

pm: "so what card are you working on?"
developer: "its the one about this that or the other, I am blahblahblah far along"
p: oh, whats the card number?
d: hold on, let me look it up.
30s later, d: #xxxxx
pm: "ok so remind me again what this card is about?"
d spends a few minutes summarizing the card which is right there and which he explained the day before. then there is a back and forth going over details the pm doesnt understand about the card. then even further back and forth on every single little thing the developer has tried and how far along he is.

even worse is that in tfs we are supposed to task our card with all of the stuff we have tried, intend to try, or know we need to do. and even further, she wants us to update the history/comments with relevant details about how far along the card is, what steps we have tried, what has been investigated, what has been uncovered. essentially, the same stuff in the tasks.

end rant but compared to this I love scrum.

Looking into finding a new job. I've taken intro calls with a number of companies that I met through hired.com and it's going well so far with those and tech screens. I'm not crazy about some of these opportunities though. If anyone knows of any cool Ruby/python web dev opportunities lmk.

Anyway, one company that wants to bring me in for an interview would have me joining a team of 4 that does "mostly full stack SEO". Anyone have any idea what this means in the modern world? I don't know much about SEO since keyword stuffing stopped being the thing.

Some of these into calls with HR drones are kinda funny.

I had another where she was just asking me to talk about what I've been working on "make sure to mention technologies used!" And she's clearly just listening for keywords like React and then typing them in to something.

That was a bad intro call and I was completely uninterested by the time it was my turn to ask questions but in an effort not to be rude I decided to ask "what are some of the problems the team is working on?" Earlier in the call she had mentioned their first product was really successful and they're pushing to launch additional products. Her response to my question though let me know that their first product has lots of signups, really low engagement/retention, and no revenue. Like lol how did this company just close millions in funding?

maybe later I will write up the reasons why and the politics involved. I am making my PM look bad but it really isnt her (well it kind of is bc she has trouble understanding stuff) and rather it comes down from the business sponsors. this team is much closer to the business sponsors who are the bigwigs of the project.

and they want certain things. really, they want the option of certain things. so they want everything in the history of the story card in case they want to see how its going. lets face it, a business sponsor is never ever going to open up an individual story card and read through the history and see how the developer is progressing. like, its not gonna happen and its totally laughable to even think about.

anyway, theres more but its ultimately driven by the sponsors and some other middle managers. the pm is fine and nice. shes just doing what bosses say.
