Oh yea bro, I am super excited and falling over my desk to build you a $500 website. Let me make sure I curate my email and response perfectly and create the optimal buyer experience for the dude who probably clicked one of my $4-5 adwords for his ****ty blog post.

You are right about private people not always being worth the effort but

guy's a joker
While I agree what you are saying and there are opportunities which may not be worth the effort, I believe many of us are suckers when it comes to buying house, repairing things etc. I would say it is more to do perhaps how to educate customers or say nice way "no thanks". Educating one by one sounds painful, building a web app and adjusting the price according choices will either turn them away, figure out what they may want or help them to understand the price. There are some points to be taken regardless of the business.

It is not that simple but simple answer like "budget" is just silly. What ever business you are doing it is a good exercise to see things from different perspectives.

I could honestly go on about this topic of pricing and fixed-price bidding for work in the agency space for a long time.

I maintain the author did a total hack job of making his point, but the whole smoke and mirrors $850 vs. $15k fixed price quoting does speak to an underlying problem, and that is pricing in general.

Pricing is hard. Very ****ing hard. Ask anyone who started a company and got it to scale, they definitely messed up pricing many times through their company's history, some probably catastrophically so.

I'm in the process of switching as much of our work as is possible/ reasonable from fixed-price to time and materials. And we just had the best start of the year for fixed-price work in the company's history. It is working "great" but it is obvious that there is better. The risk that you take on with fixed-price custom work is just too much.

Can you imagine what it would be like if the guy signed up for the $850 agency and then said "alright so this is going to be on WordPress right, surely it will be on a CMS, all your client work is on a CMS so I assumed that was part of the quote? Oh, and right now it is only 4 designs, but one of those is a blog controller page, and the other is a blog template. I'm going to have a lot of blog posts, in fact I plan to blog 5X a week, and I need a good search functionality for all my blog posts. You are going to use a separate Solr search server for my site right, because that's the right way to do it, I wasn't signing up for a WHOLE 850 DOLLARS for a site without working search, hehe."

This is why I want to quote jobs and say, brosef, this is $XXX/hr and according to (Requirements, Design, etc.) we have it quoted as X/hours. When we get to 25%/50%/75% we will update you on progress and any potential overages to our initial quote.

I'm new to Linux. Right now I'm trying to install Octave via this askubuntu thread by running the following commands:

Code:
wget ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/octave/octave-3.8.0.tar.bz2
tar -xvf octave-3.8.0.tar.bz2
cd octave-3.8.0
sudo apt-get build-dep octave
./configure
make
sudo make install
In which directory should I run those commands? How will my choice of directory affect the installation, if at all?

Why don't you install it using apt-get?

sudo apt-get install octave

This should install the binary for you. No need to compile.

I think you should always use a package manager before using a .tar file.

For tarballs, I made /builds directory. I just do all the dirty work in that file.

I wrote over 1000 lines of code in the past 2 days. That's a new record for me!

Microsoft is now working on SSH via powershell .Microsoft seems to be turning a new leaf under the new management or at the very least appearing like it.

Decided a week ago that I was going to take my machine apart because fans are kicking in, just running a twitch stream with multiple tabs open. Ordered thermal paste, cleaner and screwdrivers from ifixit. My machine model is macbook pro retina late 2013 and ifixit has lots of guides for every model btw.

So I take bottom cover off and decent amount of dust on the lid, swiped it off with micro finer cloth and proceed to blow dust off fans using mouth because I'm skeptical of using compressed air that may have stuff in it that could damage the board.

I proceed to pull warning sticker back to disconnect the power from the board with a plastic card. I then start pulling the rubber covers by fans up and lift them away. Now I'm ready to unscrew the screws holding heatsink down and **** I purchased a T6 and not T5 online so I put it back together and am mad that i'll have to go to Lowes or wait another week if ordering online.

Anyway with just blowing dust out of fans and other places on machine with mouth, fans are not kicking in anymore when watching twitch stream with tons of tabs open. Still going to replace the thermal paste but this was first time ever I've done this with a laptop and was actually really easy so far.

I wouldn't worry about compressed air having anything else in it that could damage circuits, should just be 100% air

I have a motorized compressor. Every year or so I blow out my case with 40 PSI. Been doing that for 10 years now without issues.

I've read mixed things online; people say it can contain cleaning stuff that can damage the outer layer of the board. Also spending $20 on a can of air is annoying too.

I've read that if you do that, you should make sure to use an air filter at the end.

Other tidbits from online: toothbrush is good tool to get dust off fan blades and Mothers Billet Metal Polish is supposedly amazing for buffing the outside of cpu before putting on thermal paste.

+1. Compressed air canisters are recommended because your breath or air compressors could introduce moisture into the computer and damage components.

iosys be careful when removing the heat sink. I've attempted to repair issues like that in a similar way and I've had the CPU seperate from the motherboard as it was still tightly secured by thermal paste to the sink. That ended up bricking the whole machine. iFixit is an excellent resource though.

Bought a Yubikey Neo the other day. I set it up like this:
- slot1: Superlong static PW string (the plan is to just append it to all my regular passwords)
- slot2: OATH-HOTP

I use KeePass2 as my password database and have previously used it on my desktop (Xubuntu) and work laptop (OSX-MBP) with just a master password. Not using it on my cellphone (S4) because I try not to do much stuff that requires passwords with it but am going to set it up with keepass2android.

Only set up the Yubikey for my desktop machine so far (Xubuntu) and it works fine. Enter master PW, tap the key to append the long stuff then longpress 5x for the OTP and the password safe opens.

I'm syncing my keepass DB over the internet (via my ownCloud (SSL) on a German host) so I have a feeling it might be problematic because the counter would get out of sync. Probably just need to add the counter file to ownCloud but I'm not sure

Would welcome any criticism of this setup in general. I think the weak points are:
1) Haven't really investigated the Yubikey so basically trusting the company at this point
2) Syncing the password DB via my webspace (trusting the hosting company+my admining of the webspace)
3) I think the OSX Keepass client (KyPass Companion) might be closed source but I can just build keypass from source to fix that. Def. don't want anything closed source if I can avoid it.

Edit:
The other question is where do I store the Secret Key. I have it printed and laminated for now. Will probably print some copies and store them in two houses or something :P

I think yubikey neo is cool but I would like a self destruct button on it and just use it for not having to type password but still know it.

Every two years, I'll memorize 8(or more ) random letters with numbers mixed for a month and do it again with new combo for second month till i have memory of two solid passwords. Then i'll combine them and throw a word at the end. Thus creates my new master password for the next two years that I only use to login to my machine. Maybe it is not long enough and someone can tell me on here if I need to make it longer.

1password is what I use for my password manager that has random passwords for every site, plus more. Only have to remember another password that I'm not really concerned about compared to machine login password that also is same as firmware password.

I do not write anything down on paper or store in cloud password db.
@clowntable why not just open up a port on your home router and create your own host for just your pw db instead of having german host. Maybe it is more secure in physical sense to have german host than your own host.

I think a keychain that has a button if pressed, shuts off computer would be amazing or voice command that you could shout to shut it off would be again very useful for some people.

Suppose it might depend on the brand, but generally people are gossipy idiots who believe all sorts of made-up bull****.

Just read the instructions on the canister, don't hold it upside down, give it a little short burst to start with in case there's any moisture in it, and you'll be fine.

Again, read the instructions on the canister. If people have problems with canned air, it's because they're dip****s who aren't using it right, like holding down the trigger without letting go for extended periods, or tilting the canister too much, or shaking it before use.

Worked for a small FI awhile back and a larger FI they used to process electronic transfers used Yubikey's for accessing their web services so I think it's safe to trust Yubikey.

This I think is the largest issue with your setup. I would never trust my password DB to a company selling storage solutions connected to the internet. Not only is your DB left for protection by their security, but you've put your DB in a place that is a much more likely target than your home network. Keeppass encrypts it's DB if I'm not mistaken so that will mitigate some of the security concerns, assuming their implementation is solid.

Also there are availability concerns should you lose access to your DB, unless your just using that for synchronization.

I tried that at first, but it gave me version 3.2.3, and I'm looking for at least 3.8.0.

Would you place that in the root directory like "~/builds"? (Though I assume the location won't make a difference.) Thanks for the tip!

Is there any reason you have to be in 12.04? Running a 3-year old version of Ubuntu doesn't usually work well if you want the latest software.

It is literally a waste of the company's time and money to spend my time responding to this person myself, imagine if I ask a PM about our current pipeline and how this would fit in, now imagine I ask a developer about getting this design on a site.

Very very quickly you are already in for X,000 of wasted payroll time before you have even become one of the top 5 firms in competition, we're not even talking about getting a contract signed.

I'm kinda surprised that you have this perspective that the author is anything but an absolute tire-kicker.
You sound kinda burned out tbh. At places I work at we would at least steer him to someone who does smaller websites. You get the bonus of making the client happy and building connections with up and coming developers/designers. You never know this guy might be a hobby photographer who also works high up at a multi-national company.

IMO there's no reason to be pissed at someone asking to pay you money for the service you provide - especially a guy like this who really seems to most of his ducks in a row.

I really should update to 14.04. I've had my current laptop for over five years and am about to get a new one. Planning to partition the hard drive on the new laptop and will make the switch then.
