I just did sudo apt-get dia and used that program to create my first UML design.

Not bad huh? We just learned about inheritance today.

haha I remember Faculty. seems like a million years ago but it was only a few months.

if I had to give advice to someone who was just starting out in programming, from one noob to another, learn inheritance as best as you possibly can.

Interesting. Off the top of my head I would not have separate methods for obtaining pay. I would change the class diagrams such that if implemented in C++ there would be one method for obtaining pay and it would be a pure virtual function of the base class.

So I started using that ink file picker API that was posted a few pages back. Got processed images loading into my S3 bucket, saving to users, and displaying on my app super fast (like 10 min of reading documentation). Very useful.

I'd probably rather model it as Faculty has_a Contract

Part time faculty can have a salary, typically in Germany scientific personal has 50%-100% salary contracts but are not interested in hourly wage (which only really matters for "student helpers" or ad hoc lecturers and the like).

Seeing .DS_Store files in git repositories bothers me irrationally.

I want to get a couple weeks blocked off to switch to a more modern workflow, so my boss asked me to present a proof of concept.

WTF is that?

I have to say, I like this new firefox. Looks a bit like Google Chrome, but seems to take the good parts and leave out the bad parts.

Also seems a bit snappier.

A no probably. Your next play is to make sure you make the risk of not switching clear. Furthermore you have to make it clear that your manager is the one that has made the choice to accept the risk and not you. But you have to do this in a way that is non confrontational, a way that comes off as professional. Tough assignment. How important is this to you? From your manager's point of view, two weeks of company time is a long time. Is there any middle ground that you both can accept?

Windows or Mac? I have always found Firefox to be a bit slow on my Mac.

I don't like the default look at all. It's a little harder to distinguish tabs and I generally thing this tab style of minimal and strange dune around the active one is ugly. Thunderbird looks a bit better though.

I really stopped liking FF on a Mac when you could have autocomplete or control over what URL you went to but not both.

Do you have any candidates or where you going to use those weeks to start from scratch on you research? How technical is he? The less technical the more you're going to have to explain the benefits of updating your workflow; the risks you're avoiding the gains in efficiency things like that. Two weeks sounds like a long time to pick a new IDE though...

yeah 2 weeks is a long time, even if you're also doing stuff like switching from svn to git or whatever. your boss is in the right to be skeptical and to be asking for some justification. maybe "proof of concept" is a dumb way to phrase it, but he's basically telling you that you need to justify yourself before doing something like that, which is totally fair.

Well I'm in between projects and my next 2 week sprint starts on Monday and I have no idea what they'll have to pull in for me if not this so I'm pretty sure I can get a sign off if I explain how ridiculous and slow my current extJS-based CMS web IDE front end developer workflow is.. I'm sure you can only imagine. I want to do or explore a rather clever gulp/node/sass-with-sourcemaps based thing involving curl -o that I have no real idea how to do and will need to time to figure out.

Why a job in programming is absolute hell

Loads of hyperbole I'm sure, but anyone want to weigh in on how much truth there is to this rant?
