Yea, I am thinking that too. This is a night class only once a week and homework each week, and the professor is out of town all this week so no class and no way to even ask him what the heck it is supposed to be.

The question most likely has a typo. It probably should say something like, the developer is available in 15 days for 30 days of work.

Anyone have any experience with ionic framework? Looks like a cool way to quickly make a decent phonegap app with angularjs.

Wow, yea, that makes a ton more sense.

Question: super non-IT friend asked me to make some changes to a CMS site (Joomla iirc). Pretty trivial stuff for the most part, maybe one item that could be tricky. I'm pretty sure he just wants to give me "root access" and make the changes to the live site :O

What's best/common practices for stuff like that, never done this before. Doubt the site is kept in a versioning system, doubt they have a second server or anything.
I'm assuming I could just clone the site, make the changes, test a bit and then backup old site, upload changes?
Seems so ultrahacky...but then again I'll probably do it for free :P

Edit: I'll setup a vagranted VM locally where I'll just copy the site+DB for testing

Can you do a BFI AMA on this?

Best practices are to set up another identical environment. True best practices are to use 3 environments, dev/staging/prod and branch off of dev and then push releases to staging for end user testing and acceptance, and then to push it to prod. It is a more expensive route, but typically if you are actively developing on a site paying for 2 environments is pretty much always worth it.

I dunno what "vagranted VM" means but the hosting environment can make a pretty big difference, especially for performance and depending on the different technology you are using and caching layers.

Tho, I am used to enterprise-class platforms so your friend may not be worried about caching or much in terms of performance.

I think the local VM copy is the 'right' play in this situation especially if you're limiting your work to application level changes that shouldn't be affected by weird os/environment issues.

Obviously its risky, but the risk level is reasonable given an operation that runs with only a prod server and no source control.

Just start a thread there with a bit of background and that image. Most threads there are total ****, this has potential to be a really really good one.

I am heading abroad this weekend and will have limited internet access. Will start putting the background together and put the thread up when I get back.

Has anyone played around with KoaJS yet? It looks very promising, but ExpressJS has so much momentum now that I cant see that many people switching, and Koa doesnt feel very production ready yet.

This is super cool by the way. It has bootstrap like css for designing cordova apps really quickly, and uses angularjs. Given what I'll be doing it probably makes more sense than diving into straight iOS or Android development.

I had the interview this morning. I think it went well, I really hope I get it.

The position will be with the testing team for PCIe SSDs, which is freaking cool as hell. I would be working in C/C++ and TCL. Part of the job is working on the user interface and scripting for the firmware team to use, and the other part is working on the lower level stuff to get the tools and the hardware to talk back and forth.

It seems like I would learn a ton, and would be really interesting.

Has anyone else noticed that disquss (the comment engine) seems to be perpetually broken?

Maybe I am being dumb, but that appears to be labeled "Discuss" and not "DISQUS"

My DISQUS is working perfectly fine, and havent seen any issues anywhere?

This has little to do with programming, but maybe you guys have something similar to what I'm asking. Everyday for work, I open 2 folders right on top of each other with my work stuff. It's annoying to open them up each day and navigate to the folders I need. Is there a program available that remembers which folders are in each explorer window and their placement/size, etc? Like, can I click a shortcut to open them up how I like them?

This could save me MINUTES over the next few years.

Phresh,

If you have windows 7 and have the folder explorer icon on your taskbar you can right click that icon. It will show a small list of your most popular folder destinations allowing you to go directly to it.

That'll solve half your problem.

I have Windows 7. I have Libraries to the right of my Start so I can open a new folder each time. I put a shortcut in the folder so when I right click, it's there. I guess that'll do. Thanks.

That is one way but you should be able to just right click that folder next to your start menu. It then has a "frequent" list of folders you commonly open. Then you can just click one of those normally or click the pin icon to pin it to the top unless you specifically move it.

Mine doesn't have a frequent list when I right click it. Only Windows Explorer and Unpin.

Create a desktop shortcut?

That's what I do anyways. In general, they open to the size and place I had them before.
