I really doubt that that the Kims are going to just let everyone have computers w/ wifi and I'm sure they'll take a page from the Great Firewall if push comes to shove.

There's already a whole underground industry smuggling SD cards and other proof of the outside world into North Korea. http://www.salon.com/2012/12/31/nort...dge_smugglers/ They could smuggle in small devices that could connect to the Internet as well, assuming the crackdown hasn't been 100% successful.

The big mistake a lot of the countries caught up in the Arab Spring made was allowing satellite dishes. It took a decade or so, but eventually people emerged out of ignorance and realized that their leaders were completely full of ****. http://www.ranyontheroyals.com/2011/...evolution.html

anyone here use digitalocean? i'd like to know if, when you need to upgrade, you have to migrate and redo all your server setup or if they can just magically allocate you more memory?

No, looks interesting though.

Under the features page it says.

Easy-to-use Control Panel

An intuitive user interface to control all of your virtual servers. Create, resize, rebuild and snapshot with single clicks. An experience designed around the user instead of technology.
If you can snapshot seems like it shouldn't be too hard. On AWS all you need to move up is a snapshot and the same bit level (64, 32) of machine. So I wouldn't see why the claim wouldn't be legit.

Do you guys still wear a suit to tech interviews? I've worn a suit to every interview I've ever been to, but a lot of these new startup companies trying to be "hip" want to see if you fit in with their culture just as much as your qualifications.

Just ask ahead of time. Unless it's a bank or something - sharp business casual should be fine.

I would not wear a suit and I wouldn't want to work at a company that wants me to wear a suit.

Slightly interesting note from my old job (ERP software, very techy though). Noone there wanted to wear a suit but it's kind of expected when dealing with ERP customers so there was a no suits policy (VP sales and CEO/owner wore one usually noone else did) with the exception that whenever customers were sheduled to visit a mail was sent around and people would wear suits (some just kept them at the office). One day I didn't check my mail and LDO it was a "customer day" so everyone was hacking away in a suit and the VP Marketing showed up in a Linux shirt.
[obviously that's why the customer ended up buying from us...not really but it makes the story better]

if you are young, i read suit as "enthusiastic". if you are old, i read it as "out of touch". i don't think anything (except "pass") if you're wearing slacks and a button-down (tie or no tie). hth.

hah, this is interesting. what is your reason for auto-passing on someone wearing slacks and a shirt? and what would be the outfit that you most like to see someone wearing?

Seems like an unnecessary risk to not wear a tie to any formal interview.

sorry, by "pass" i just mean "no opinion either way".

i think this is the right window to aim for; impress me with your knowledge and experience, not your taste in haberdashers.

Probably due to the midwest upbringing, but I can't bring myself to go to an interview in a t-shirt. I thought khakis and a button-down w/o a tie is a decent compromise, but tyler_cracker says I'm wrong.

I know at least two people who are hireing in IT and will mentally downgrade you if you show up in a suit. I guess that's the exception but be aware that it can be like that, too. Ultimately comes down to the same principle that makes people pick pets that look like them...so I'd guess the nerdier the people at the company the better it becomes to go no suit.

Just goes to show that being good at one thing doesn't make you good at everything. Being downgraded for wearing a suit is retarted unless there were specific comments someplace about the atmosphere at the interview. Wear something that shows you respect the interview process, and by extension the people who are interviewing you.

It's human nature and there's decent evidence. Even if there is no explicit policy if you show up looking like the people that work there (and make the hireing decisions which are often people wearing suits) your chances are probably higher.

However suit is convention and following convention is also a very strong human nature thing.

I always wear a suit. I think Clowntable is way out of touch on this subject. You will almost never hurt your chances by overdressing for a job interview.

Pretty sure smart jeans, black shoes, shirt with a jumper over the top is the safest sort of attire imo for this sort of interview

Yes my advice is def. not for the mainstream. I have very specific requirements for the companies I like to work for. I would also feel pretty uncomfortable if I knew the software I use was mostly developed by people wearing suits

My entire argument boils down to...the less a company pays attention to your outfit the more techy it is going to be. The more techy the better (ldo). The more attention it pays to your suit the more power people wearing suits have (bad ldo).

(it also means that I don't really enjoy big companies...anything that has a dedicated HR department is usually too big for my taste)

This. It's funny to me that the main reason to allow casual dress is about making people comfortable doing their work and not having to worry about appearances and then some people twist that around to worrying about appearances.

I've worn a suit to every interview in my life. Not once has that translated to having to wear a suit on the job. You just dress up for the interview, and then revert to whatever the normal dress code is when you show up to work.

My company is extremely casual (jeans and t-shirt no problem unless I have to meet with reps from other companies, interview someone, or travel for business) but I think we would be surprised to have a candidate show up for an interview not dressed in a suit.

This is Biotech though, not IT.

I will always wear a suit unless it's one of the obvious exceptions people have pointed out like Harley D or Apple. I would also hope the recruiter/HR person would give you a heads up about this for lesser known companies that would somehow punish you for having the respect to dress up for an interview.

Hmm so had an in person interview/screening with a "talent aquisition" person a couple days ago and she emails me to set up a 2nd interview and says "I have arranged for a phone interview since you have already made a trip to our offices." with a senior dev and the hiring manager. Would it be out of place to ask if I could come in again? I really hate conference call speaker phone phone interviews.

not out of line; she's just trying to help you out, so do what is most comfortable for you.

however i wouldn't waste time talking to "talent acquisition". middlemen don't add value here.
