I'm not gung-ho on the idea. The sites with good commentary are far and few between. Coding Horror has a decent one, which I'm sure Atwood moderates to death. Yahoo News is such a terrible article repository that the comments are more interesting.than the articles, which I suspect is the point.

I like Disqus, it markets itself as a drag and drop instant comments on your site module - and it really is that easy to add to your site.

My only caveats with it are:
- They claim to be SEO friendly, last time I checked the comments were definitely not indexable by Google
- Comments are a *fairly* trivial thing to add to your site. If Disqus holds all the data it could cause problems later down the line

Easy to add to the site, but no value add to the site.

dave,

sounds like you (and the rest of this thread) need a nice strong dose of YAGNI. do the simplest thing that could possibly work now. when you become a blogging superstar with millions of uniques and a legion of fans who just can't wait to get into enlightened, fascinating discussion about your articles, replace it with something better.

until then, focus on something that actually matters, like content. there are ~0 people in the universe who will visit your site and be like, "wow, cool article, but he uses disqus for comments? **** this i'm out."

I had a really interesting and fruitful comment to make about this decision which was going to add incredible business value not to mention change your life forever, Dave, but now I have nowhere to put it so I guess I'll just leave this site in a fit of morose anger and never come back.

hey fellas, i love browsing the 2p2 forums always so much fun and lots of info to be found. i suck at poker and i'm unemployed so when i saw the codecademy link some1 posted i jumped at the chance. i've now created my own website and it looks like srs awful. However, am I allowed to post my website and ask for feedback and comments on how to improve it?

My website doesn't have any ads and it's about finding out how much chocolate milk you should drink according to your exercise intensity and length.

Thanks for any help!

I do not support the limitations of chocolate milk but I think posting the site is fine.

Anyone work with web sockets and can recommend a beginner guide to them? I'd like to start playing around with it but it all seems over my head, I use LAMP stack if that helps.

Code:
.on( events [, selector] [, data], handler(eventObject) )
from jquery docs

Code:
array explode ( string $delimiter , string $string [, int $limit ] )
from php docs

are the commas inside the brackets just a convention or do they hold some meaning opposed to commas outside of brackets?

i noticed this forever ago but never have been assed to ask until now.

do the brackets just mean its optional? at first glance i thought it meant the parameter was an array. nevermind actually. lol.

yeah they are just optional arguments.

Web sockets are pretty similar to javascript events. I imagine it works about the same in most languages. You just listen for messages of a certain value and then react to them in a few different ways (broadcast to everyone or only the sender) on the server's end.

That is a high level over view of how they work. The rest is just implementation details.

I don't know about using web sockets with PHP but Googling for that resulted in this:
http://socketo.me/

It looks like it's fairly popular and maintained.

I've been working with websockets for the last week and really been enjoying using them, if you want good server side code to look at you can poke around Fleck:
https://github.com/statianzo/Fleck

They also give good simple client examples.

One limiting factor of websockets at the moment is they don't support UDP streams (only TCP). For real time applications this can be problematic.

I am facing a confusing UI issue.

I wrote Part Two of the article series I submitted to Hacker News. Still getting a lot of trickle effect from the Sunday before last, which a ton of returning visitors reading Part One. I released Part Two on Saturday. The visitors keep returning to read Part One.

This is a surprising thing because the old URL reads "I moved the URL of this page to make navigation easier, sorry for the inconvenience," then I list Part One, Part Two, and Resources links. These links are also on the left nav box.

Now that the new page has been up for a few days, there is almost zero people looking at Part Two and I honestly don't understand why. I thought that, if anything, I waited too long to release Part Two.

I put myself in a strange area: Every new article builds upon the last and there is already a bottleneck despite readers having over a week to examine and understand the previous material. With every release, I can submit the new article to repositories, but no matter what, the newest article will be confusing to a decent portion of the readers who are first exposed to the series. Really a tough balance to achieve. I guess this is why serial articles don't exist on the internet.

It's pretty popular to briefly cover stuff from the previous article at the start of the article if it's a multi-article topic. This happens a lot in TV shows where an episode runs over 1 time slot.

All you really need to do is link back to the previous article or if you don't mind some house keeping then link to all parts of the article somewhere at the top. People who are keeping up can just skip that sentence and newcomers get easy access links to the old articles. Not very confusing at all IMO.
