eipi,

you post the whole dumb gnu/linux thing but no comment about me referring to linux as unix? WHERE IS YOUR DOGMA NOW??

shabby,

practically, not at all. philosophically, sure.

i'll confess that when i log into a vanilla macos or bsd or solaris box, the first thing that bites me is not some kernel flag or virtual memory implementation or scheduling design decision; it's that the command line tools are ****ing worthless compared to the gnu equivalent.

clown,

i was playing teh internet pokar in vmware in 2004 with everything except PokerAce HUD (yes i am old) working fine. vm software is a bajilion times better now, so i'm sure you'll be fine. bonus points for running the hh datastore on the host os where it ought to be a little more performant.

Fine I'll say it: If Emacs had a web browser, it would be my entire operating system.

VMWare on windows host works great, does everything you could want automagically. VMWare player is free and does almost everything.

I like to buy machines with excessive RAM so running any number of VMs is never an issue.

Yeah that was going to be another question. Postgres on Windows feels somewhat odd anyways :P
Guess I'll just try it eventually

I have decent experience with Windows on Windows using VMWare stuff (part of a freelance job) but would want to use VirtualBox for this due to it being more open and all. When I used VMWare they were a lot better than VB with regards to graphics cards and so forth has VB cought up with that?

Depending on what you're doing, you might have it a bit easier than raw poker-eval with psim.dll from here: http://www.pokerai.org/pf3/viewtopic...b0be68608dd371 there's a nice AHK GUI full of examples
has Java interface iirc. and there's always poker-eval

I have to install a desktop environment. I'm using Arch Linux. I'm thinking about either Xfce or Razor-QT. Anyone got an opinion on either of these?

I feel tempted to just keep it command-line but that feels suicidal...

So dare I ask why didn't you just go with one of the bog standard distros that do that for you?

I've tried Ubuntu and the first thought was: "I want to uninstall x y z a b c d e."

Installing Arch Linux is not as scary as it sounds. Very easy, actually.

i used to hate anything that used Qt for some reason (maybe early bad experience with KDE?) but Razor-Qt looks really nice.

Dave,

Isn't xfce like a million years old? Older != wiser where window managers are involved.

A guy at work likes xmonad but he's weird and it's an incredibly subjectve, personal thing. So try some until you have a local minimum of wtfs/min and tweak from there.

Urinal,

I guess you're pretty familiar w/ razor-QT? It doesn't have a built-in WM at all. I find the prospect of customizing my own attractive.

I just looked it up and that looks like piling junk on more junk to cover the junk. Maybe xmonad is cool. Is your coworker a Haskell user?

Nice thing about VM is that you can take snapshots and roll back. Pretty awesome. At first exposure to snapshots, I was like wtf, why isn't anything saving? Bummer, reinstall again!

+1 !!!!

For those who think Arch is weird: I can say that getting Arch up and running is FAR easier than setting up a semi-functioning programming environment in Windows. The docs are very clear on what to do.

Arch is really good for development. I don't know a ton about the distro but I think their philosophy is to patch as much as possible.

I remember their package manager having the latest version of everything (I checked their web site). Compare this with Debain stable or something and you'll find packages that are 2 or even 3 years old even for popular web dev related services.

It's nice being able to install things with a package manager. 99.9% of the time with Debian I found myself installing from source because the package manager was comically out of date.

Well, Debian isn't really a good example of a typical Linux-based OS. Debian was always firstly an ideological venture.

Why not? It's one of the most popular server distros and it's pretty popular amongst linux desktop users. The only reason I'm using it is locally is because I feel comfortable/confident deploying it.

Ubuntu has the same problem with its package manager, everything is really out of date. gentoo did too the last time I tried it (only used it very briefly).

LXDE is solid https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LXDE

Its super light-weight, very fast, and very functional.

I have xfce at work (would have been perfectly happy with gnome which I have at home, but it had a weird interaction with some of our in-house software). It works very well for me, honestly I don't think there are any Gnome features I use that I find myself missing at work.

heroku, appfrog, etc

how do these services compare to traditional web hosting? i'm a bit of a newb when it comes to this whole web app space

for example, appfrog has a free plan with up to 2gb memory. can i just throw up wordpress and have free webhosting forever?

i am a bit confused by appfog as well. the 2G memory if free but there is no persistent storage so i assume you pay for your database -- but i can't find pricing for that on the website. also it's unclear to me what they offer that i wouldn't get with my own AWS instance? are they selling simplicity of setup and deployment or something else?
