Backbone is javascript. Just learn more about javascript because it's crucial to understand key concepts of the language to really "get" backbone or any structure related client side framework.

html 5 is more of a collection of concepts that when put together you get what people unofficially labeled "an html 5 website". It's kind of similar to people using web 2.0 to describe a site. The exception to this would be html 5 games I guess, since they rely on the canvas tag and are really an html 5 only feature.

The key thing HTML 5 does is that its standards are going to be developed well, so that they are a) practical for browsers to implement and b) useful for developers to target.

So far it's working fairly well, I'd say.

JS is actually really hard to learn well. I don't just mean messing around with jquery to update a few dom elements or make some ajax calls either.

Between how scoping works, what you can do with functions and the sheer number of ways to do things (not talking about cross browser stuff either) it makes learning the language pretty difficult.

At the same time I also feel like it's one of the easier languages to start getting stuff done with without any real knowledge in it.

Uninstall everything you installed. Then just install python(x,y). Then open Spyder and iPython within Spyder and start hacking.

If you want to use a module from outside the standard library, there's a decent chance it was included with pythonxy, so try importing it and see if it works. If not, install it with easy_install.

There's a published Google classroom introduction to Python. I remember watching it once when I thought I would migrate over to Django a few years ago.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKTZoB2Vjuk

It was pretty good. After that just dive into Django, Flask or Pyramid for web development.

Django = batteries included approach similar to rails
Flask = similar to sinatra
Pyramid = No idea, but it seems popular

neko,

glad i could help. apple store configuration surprisingly non-terrible, especially if you have an appointment (and don't want to, y'know, play with apple products with every family in the mall containing a 7 year-old).

neil,

i'm rapidly coming around on that containment thread idea.

The general consensus is that there is a lot of reason to be nice to the Genius folks because they have a lot of leeway to be hawsome to you. You know, if you need a reason not to be a jerk to salespeople...

That's basically the entire point.

Would have made it JavaScript and ASP.net. Switch them around. JavaScript first attracts better people imo (even if ASP.net is the main job to be done which seems to be the case)

Some minor stuff...less !s, capitalize Friday. Move specing computer below website traffic. Other than that it looks ok but I usually prefer more info on the team/company and I might een expect it at the very top i.e. what do you do, who can I work with that stuff at the bottom looks a bit like an afterthought.

I do like the "how we operate part" basically would have mixed that with some company info into a "here's why we're great" kind of thingy.

Thanks for feedback, I mean it! Will look at making some revisions to it tomorrow.

@jj have you used other sites with any success? This is a whole new world to me

Congrats Gull...Pretty awesome you guys are at the stage where you can hire someone!

My only advice is to take your time and be very very very careful about who you hire. A hiring mistake at this stage of your company could be very costly. It's way better to not hire anyone than it is to hire a dog.

Congratulations

Constructive criticism.

Strikes me as being a bit over personal. Obviously!!! you've very! excited! (and love (brackets)), but it doesn't seem particularly professional.

I'd leave out:
- Pizza
- Dress code
- Computer Spec
- The bracketed portion of working hours

I'd also turn the remaining perks & how we operate into the Skills section.

I'll echo Neko here. Take your time. When hiring someone particularly in a small company it is important to find someone who 'fits'

I don't know, I think the tone is right for the kind of person you want for a start up. You're looking for uber geeks not someone who wants to weigh all the plusses and minuses to working at a start up. Our last campaign we said we were looking for honey badgers.

Good Luck!

You can make the add personal, but make it personal from the company perspective. ie Company in-jokes etc, rather than from the readers perspective. You want to pique their interest rather than sell yourself.

Most of the things listed i'd reserve for the interview interview itself.

I strongly disagree with this advice. I think what you have sets the tone perfectly and will probably resonate well with the kind of people you want.

I'd remove the bracketed part of Computer Spec - I think within reason is understood.

Honestly nothing has worked particularly well (in terms of job sites). But we've ended up going with just the free sites since they work just as well as the paid sites.

I think the vast majority of our good candidates have come from someplace other than a job site.

Gul, no idea how suitable this is for you, but I have seen gun.io crop up a few times on Hacker News... its mostly aimed at the US, but I had a quick look and there are a few postings for London.

I originally thought the service was free, but at the bottom of the site there is a 'money back guarantee'... might be worth a look anyway.

Very much this. You should really concider every non-hire a win instead of getting frustrated/thinking you're running out of time.

Also...might want to hit universities, community colleges and so forth. Can't really hurt to network for the future even if you can't hire anyone/noone is graduating right now etc.
