You need a mac to develop for iphone/ipod/ipad, right? Or is it possible on other platforms?

Might be possible on a hacintosh, but it sounds like a great reason to get a giant iMac...

Just released my new dashboard widget that allows you to tweet from your dashboard. Appropriately named tweetmydash. Was quite interesting tapping into the new twitter PIN authentication API.

If anyone wants to check it out... http://ginkapps.com/tweetmydash

Basically... you need a Mac. I did once see a company that allowed you to develop iPhone apps on windows, then you would send them the app and they would compile and submit it to apple, but I don't think this is a very good solution.

Thanks - yea, none of those non-Mac options look very tempting, so I guess I'll invest in a Mac if I should happen to get a good app-idea sometime in the future

I would recommend a mac anyway. They are a good piece of kit, and long lasting.

Have a question about Mac.

I was looking and Yellow Dog Linux (one of the future OCW courses require it) and it appears that they only go so far as supporting G4 or G5. I see I can pick a G4 iMac for about $200. Is it worth wasting my time on this one? Is there a way to trick a more modern Mac into using YDL?

I will never by anything from that company, they have the worst customer support in history. Most people who by from them seem to be very satisfied, but when you have problems with their stuff you are treated like ****. I will never by anything from a company that treats their customers as badly as they do.

The company seems to also be very aggressive against other businesses which i don't like. I understand the need to compete, but they seem to take it to far

Why not write it for Android?

I know microsoft is an aggressive company, but I haven't heard of them treating thier customers nearly as badly. But youre right I'm not perfectly consistent, apple is definitely easier to avoid.

My sister has a position in a company where she has to mediate alot of customer complaints regarding macs and iphones and apple is apperantly worse than any other company she deals with and with quite a wide margin, maybe thats why I get more upset with that company.

That said I don't particularly like microsoft and if it wasn't for work I would probably stick to linux

I do like C# though.. alot

There is AndroidMono, I haven't tried it but here is the URL: http://android.xamarin.com/

This will allow you to make Android apps in C#.

Yes, I think the best plan would be to write it for Android first and then use the undoubtedly huge amount of money made from that to buy a Mac and make it for iPhone/iPad.

Now I just have to figure out what "it" is

i'll wait here while you give them a call (or go to a microsoft store(?)) to get help with a problem you're having with one of their products.

don't worry -- i'm stuck in eastern washington right now so it's not like i have anywhere to go.

Whats with the attitude? Like I said, my view is prob tainted by my convos with my sister who sounds like she wants to puke everytime she talks about them. I also made it pretty clear I don't like microsoft either and wouldnt use their stuff if it wasnt for having to pay the bills.

I also understand, of course, that to stay away from companies that behave badly is going to make life a lot harder and isn't practically possible.

I would ignore this "yellow dog" requirement and substitute any other linux. CentOS is probably good, since this is the basis for Yellow Dog - but really any linux will do, they're much more the same than they are different.

My buddy had a $5k G5 a few years back. He was very happy with the Genius Bar. When the computer sparked, they fixed it twice with no questions asked. Then they replaced it. Mind that this was about when the iPod first came out (his sparked out in one year, lol) and before Jobs told people to hold a $500 phone like so.

Your sister's experience counters every industry survey on customer support ever, so you getting all fired up over her evidence seems silly and almost kook-esque.

I'm not a fan of Apple and in many ways I think they're worse than Microsoft in terms of how they deal with other companies and their customers.

But at the end of the day - I've never had a Mac fail in a catastrophic way (like I have with Windows), I've never had a ridiculously buggy OS with a MAC and developing on them is so much easier (assuming you're not doing a Windows application obviously).

Do I like Apple's proprietary hardware bull**** nonsense? Absolutely not. I think it is a plague on society. Do I like their software? Yes, it is clearly superior, but the hardware restrictions are a joke.

Do I think Apple's customer service is bad? Now this is ridiculous. This is about the only thing they do perfectly. How can you hate on them?

Then either you got lucky or the Genius Bar is only for people who are extremely unlucky. Not sure what you mean by catastrophic though. Every non-virus failure I ever seen on a PC has been HD or MoBo sparks, which appears to be a manufacturer failure, not an OS failure.

My friend had Leopard, and his issues were very common and OS~based. My experiences with Mac ends at G3, G4, G5, so I don't know how things have changed since the conversion to Intel. I only know that those computers were painful to use, so I pretty much swore off Macs after that. At least I kept my senses and didn't buy an iPad or Air.
