did you encrypt it? also do you stream media to your desktop/htpc via vlc/xbmc/winamp?
having all media and other important data on an encrypted nas and only programs and temp stuff on the actual desktop/laptop is pretty sweet imo.

Random question:

Anyone have any recommendations for PC (desktop) speakers?

I have an old set of Sony speakers. I'm not even sure where they came from, but they worked on my laptops and now my desktop so I've just been using them. They don't sound like they have any real bass in them. The sound is still good, but I think the quality could be better.

I don't need anything that is going to blow out the windows and I don't need anything that is going to shake everything in my house. Just something with quality, and inexpensive, like less than $50.

Mostly what I'd be using them for is sometimes I listen to music, I watch youtube videos every now and then, and I play Starcraft 2 .

EDIT: I also prefer something that is black in color, or at least a dark color (not white or any crazy color).

zyrth,

i have a windows 7 "media" PC hooked up to my TV with half a dozen hard drives in it, all set to share. It's always on, and thus, records stuff from TV and allows me to stream to/from there and also serves as a backup.

Merry Christmas- Funkyworms' 12 Days of Christmas

I figured I'd post this in here in case someone stumbles upon this thread and needs some personal help. I've already done 5 sessions and I'm going to one per day for the next 7 days.

hi guys,

sorry to bother you, but Im absolute ****** when it comes to tech stuff and I dont think that this issue is worth its own thread.
Basically Im picking up monitor for tiling 12 tables.
it looks like one of these 3:

24" HP LA2405wg
26" FUJITSU SL3260W
26" iiyama ProLite E2607WS-B1 black

all of them are 1920*1200

is it too small resolution for 26inch?
which one would you pick? difference in price is not that big
12-17-2010 , 02:28 PM
no, that's not bad at all. it'll be a bit bigger than other monitors but will still be nice.
12-17-2010 , 09:20 PM
Random Q: When my monitor is hooked up to my laptop through VGA, i get really bad feedback (horizontal flickering lines) whenever I move the mouse. The lines are there regardless of whether I move the mouse or not, but are much less noticeable until I move the mouse. The lines are also visible if the mouse is unplugged. I'm pretty sure this is a VGA/video card issue, because when I use my laptop dock I am able to connect to my monitor through use of DVI-HDMI, and see no problem. Is there any fix for this or am I screwed? (Didn't bring my dock home with me for break)

I'm trying to sell something on craigslist, and I've been getting a **** load of scam attempts. I'm using thunderbird, and most of them I can tell what IP address the email sender's is, but I'm not sure about this.

Which one of these is the persons IP address who sent me the email?

12-19-2010 , 09:23 PM
Think I should mention, I've gotten 3 emails from that person. The original and two in correspondence. The original email was apparently sent from an Iphone as it says "sent from my Iphone" in the email, and that's the email headers from that email.

The two other emails I got were apparently sent from a computer, or otherwise not from an Iphone as they don't say from an Iphone.

I have the X-originating IP from those two emails, and they both check out as being US IP addresses, but I'm not sure of the state.

Just thought I should mention that.

Seriously giving thought to hiring myself out to handle assorted computer work amongst those I know. Lately the amount of tech advice I have been giving out is CRAZY large and many of my "friends" have tried to get me to just handle all their maintenance tasks remotely on a semi-regular basis, for free, because we are "friends". I am quite certain that these "friends" would be willing to hand over a small fee for me to handle these VERY basic maintenance routines as a scheduled basis. It would literally be as easy as making certain antivirus, firewall, windows, et cetera, were up to date. Further, I would probably update all their software by using something like Secunia to check for vulnerabilities in anything that is not used all that often. Maybe I would even handle backups and the like.

I really think I could get like 30 to 40 people at like $15/month to make their computer problems disappear. It would take virtually no time from home either, as I could do like 4 or 5 at a time via my home setup, so like 3 hours or so a week to keep them up and running.

Im'ma explore this opp and perhaps withdraw free support from some of my friends, lol!

NSight7, that's a huge problem for any of us people who are technically literate.

It actually pisses me off when they take it for granted when I go make a house call, clean up/format their computer, reinstall whatever crap they need and spend like 4hours doing so.

I would never imagine going into a friend's restaurant and expecting to eat free but when they expect free IT support, is it any different? It's as if my time has no value on it.

nsight + others,

windows task scheduler + ninite = automatically update software on a regular basis, imo.

Great link, I think someone posted that awhile back in here. Fortunately, I don't do such house calls anymore and haven't had to try it.

How are you using it with Task Scheduler though?

Random question:

The Dell U2711 is £700 via dell/amazon, but I can get it (apparently new, with a full 3 yr warranty, thats not an import) via ebay for £590

How can people on ebay sell dell products cheaper than dell themselves?
12-22-2010 , 07:36 AM
the price that dell currently advertises on their website is not always the cheapest price that they sell to 100% of buyers.

has only been a week, but any progress on this?

I just got multiple calls from a family member (I'm at work) essentially demanding that I tell them how to fix their computer because they took the day off and want to use it. tilted the hell out of me.

I have been out of town for the holidays, so no real progress on this front. I mentioned it to one of the people I help the most and she semi-tilted on having to pay me $15 a month to handle the tasks that I should be handling for "free" since I apparently "LOVE" computers (this is actually something my sister argued once upon a time, that getting me to fix her computer was something that was "fun" for me so she is just helping me do what I like to do). She will probably pay when I cut her off a bit, but we will see.

I just spent 4-5 hours over the phone trying to debug my dad's computer. Problem was "things running really really slow and some things taking a long time to open" (on a three-month-old computer that I built and tweaked to the max). I eventually got to boot into safe mode and run a complete virus scan. System restore didn't help. After getting fed up after awhile of things taking so long to explain over the phone, I had him set up VNC, and there was still problems clicking so I had him type the whole address to the download. Oh eff you ATT for 4th dropped call of the night. whatismyip.com. downstairs computer to try to port forward that somehow (btw portforward.com showing the wrong pictures for the exact model # of the router making it EVEN HARDER). I finally got it set up. Logged in, he watches me for 15 seconds trying to do something "wow it's working great when you do it". EFF YOU HALF-BROKEN MOUSE...lol.

I actually like doing tech support type stuff and gladly give out my help, but over the phone is terrible.
