hey guys, I'm new here and didn't read the stickies so I'm not aware that asking about torrenting things is a good way to get even more infraction points than I already have or maybe even banned! Thanks!

PS3 Rant!@#!@$@#!!

something as useful and trivial as playing MKV's off an external USB hard drive on the PS3 really shouldn't be as ****ing impossible as it currently is.

-I don't want to stream from another computer just because I don't feel I need to when the PS3 is adequately powered to play these.
-WTF can't PS3 use something other than FAT32 on external drives (thus prohibiting filesizes larger than 4GB)

I never play games on this stupid thing, I should sell the POS and buy an SSD or some HTPC

fwiw, having a windows pc hooked up to your tv is pretty awesome, imo.

easy access to youtube, media storage, recording and downloading, and everything else that comes with it, is pretty good, imo.

Figured I would just post this here rather than open up a new thread.

I'm looking to get a new computer, and since my Uncle works for Dell, he can get me a sweet discount, so I was thinking about the XPS 8100 Desktop. The specs of note are an Intel Core i5 650 processor, up to 8GB of SDRAM/DDR3/1333MHz and 4DIMMS (don't know what this is), a 1TB HD, and a ATI HD5450 Radeon video card. Does this sound reasonable for me, if I want to run like 12 tables/HEM/internet browser and messenger, iTunes, and maybe Skype/Teamviewer as well. Thanks in advance for your input.

4DIMMS means there are 4 slots on the motherboard to insert ram/memory. 4 is very good as allows you to increase more ram easily. Ram is so cheap now I'd just get 4x2gb for 8 total.

the machine is fine for what you want to do, if you really want it to be blazing fast, consider getting an SSD to install the HEM/Postgresql on.

http://www.w3schools.com/ for web stuff

www.oreilly.com for books

Good old newsgroups/irc is still the best "forum" on the web.

So I want to connect my Panasonic G25 into the internet without buying their ridiculously priced wireless adapter. I believe I can just buy a wireless router and turn it into a "bridge" and plug the tv into it right? Will the Linksys WRT54G2 work for this? Does anyone have a link to instructions on how to set it up?

Is this a decent deal for the router? http://cgi.ebay.com/LINKSYS-WRT54G2-...item1c14e8e37a

Great, thanks a lot. I'm also going to be running a simple 18" monitor, but if I upgrade that to a 24" in the next few months, I assume everything will be fine. Thanks again.

I did something similar not too long ago using a Linksys WRT54GL. IIRC, the standard Linksys firmware on my router did not support bridge mode. The router you list may support bridge mode, but if not there is no problem if you can flash Tomato firmware or dd-wrt firmware on your router. Check these links to see if your router can be flashed with either firmware. I found the procedure seemed a bit daunting for dd-wrt so I flashed Tomato. Tomato's procedure was relatively easy to understand and implement. Changing the settings after Tomato was installed also was relatively easy.

After briefly looking at the two links, it appears that dd-wrt will work on that router but Tomato will not. But verify that for yourself as I could have overlooked something. But before that, be sure to check if that router will support bridge mode without flashing either.

Good luck.

Hey all. Just wondering if anyone here has any experience in customizing their iTunes with different skins, different visualizers, or anything i may not know about.

I was able to locate and download some skins for my iTunes v.10 yet there is no info on how to actually make the changes.

Thanx for any help!

Twilight theme!

On a sidenote, uninstalling iTunes and using foobar2000 instead made my life much more pleasant.

recently, my pc has been making an odd whirring sound similar to the sort a dying fan would make only less irritating. however, it only actually does this for a second or two on bootup, round about when the black winxp screen is on but before a login prompt. any ideas what this would be?

At bootup, every fan spins at its max capacity before BIOS takes control. When it sounds like a dying fan, it is most likely a dying fan.

I know this is a really vague Q, but in practice, what differences are you likely to see between a laptop with, let's say, the fastest i3 CPU vs. an i5 CPU, if they both have 6gb RAM?

Just how "processor intensive" would software need to be for you to see some difference? I know i3 lacks turbo boost.

None that you can really "feel", but definitely measure.

Unless you're using applications that really rely on lets say floating point calculations like 3dsmax and even then, you need big files to process.

You won't really notice the difference if a tasks takes 3s or 2.7s.

But when you encode huge media files that take 20 mins to process, you might save some time if its 18 mins instead.

And of course, some 3D games are very CPU intense and it will affect your framerate.

For opening your browser, creating a pdf out of a .doc or such, you won't notice any difference at all.

What really gives you an speed boost you can feel is an SSD.

In the current state CPUs are generally so fast that the bottleneck is more to bring the data to the CPU so it can make its calculations.

Oh, and the size of the cache the CPU has on it's die makes much more of an noticeable speed increase than clock speed.

Need some help.

I have a desktop that I quit using when the monitor died, and have just been using my laptop since then. Now I want to get rid of the desktop, but I want to get some things off of it first and scrub the HD before I get rid of it. Is there anyway to access the HD from my laptop? I have a LAN line I can use, and I also have a wireless USB hub to use if that would work. I just don't want to try to find a monitor for a couple hours worth of work if I don't have to.
