The netherlands qualifies for about half the world cups and when they do they have amazing results. This is an example of cyclical talent.

Italy on the other hand has only failed to qualify once. Thats strong football pedigree. Same with germany

The floor for USA is obviously substantially lower than pure footballing nations, but i think people underestimate the odds of signifcant upward variance on our cieling. Very few countries have a very high floor.

I see what you're saying and don't necessarily disagree.

That said, I've looked at the last 9 WCs (1982 - 2014 ... got bored so stopped at 1982) which consists of 36 SF spots. 35 of the 36 spots were filled by UEFA or CONMEBOL teams (exception: 2002 - S. Korea).

So I find it amusing to lay even odds on the U.S. making a WC SF in one of the next 10 WCs. Hell, I'd put the over/under at 1.5 in the number of WC QF appearances the U.S. will have during the next 10 WCs (and I'd probably put $$$ on the under).

Let's just ignore how the U.S. roundly outplayed Germany in that game, and were an uncalled handball on the goal line away from tying it up.

Yeah, I'll ignore it. They lost. Germany was the better side.

The U.S. makes a WC SF when they, you know, make a WC SF.

Sure, but it's unlikely.

In the next 10 WCs the U.S. has what 1 or 2 QF matches. I still believe the U.S. is a sizable dog to play in a WC SF in one of the next 10 WCs.

Not sure why the Netherlands is being brought up. Their WC pedigree is sick. If it's to show how deep/talented Euro football is, then yes I agree with that point (hell, Greece has won a Euro this century) . The U.S. doesn't even qualify for a WC if it were a European country.

Regarding a strong footballing pedigree, the majority of Euro players are playing in Euro leagues. Stronger leagues. Stronger competition. Stronger trainers. Stronger training. Stronger football in every measurable facet. This translates to stronger national teams across the board.
You must not have watched the 2009 Confederations Cup bro!!

Smoked Europe's best 2-0 and were up 2-0 to SA's best before loling

...while you are ignoring that it was a very poor german team. Probably not the calibre of team people are talking about when mentioning elite euro or SA countries

Furthermore, We had a great first 15 minutes in that game, a frenetic last 20, and were not necessarily any better in between those stretches.

One thing good about the Arena hire is that it will mend some fences between USSF and MLS. That's probably pretty crucial in the long term.

Ffs you have some cheek.

USA more than capable of luck boxing a final, Celtic completely incapable of beating either City or Barca at home.

Ok hipster bollocks.

Because a non-UEFA / non-CONMEBOL side has luckboxed a spot in the WC finals in the past. Oh wait ...

That meant to read semifinal as per the discussion. Late night posting will do that to you. I'm not saying we will but my point is being amongst the world elites and luck boxing a semifinal are not the same thing

US is clearly inferior to sides like Croatia and Greece. They would have a hard time qualifying in Europe.

Right. That's what I'm saying. They'd qualify now and then.

What's sad is the US has never had a player remotely nearly as good as Luka Modric.

Why is it "sad". We're not a footballing nation.

It's sad Greece has never had a Michael Jordan or a Tiger Woods or a Joe Montana. Sad. Maybe one day.

Neither is Croatia. And it has about 4.5 million people, like South Carolina or Alabama. Not setting the bar very high to compete with a tiny country still recovering from a civil war. US certainly has more people playing soccer, with more resources dedicated to soccer, and generally better conditions for playing soccer, than Croatia.

Also, Greece is quite respectable at basketball.

Why haven't they ever produced an NBA all-star?

Sad.

You can't see the forest for the trees. Imagine if Alabama fielded a better football team than the entire rest of the united states.

Then again maybe you have a point. Roll Tide.
