People here are really underestimating the impact Steve Williams had on Tigers career, big mistake getting rid of him

Steve bulldogged comraderie and attitude helped get Tiger battlehardened for the majors, he just doesnt have that edge anymore

I saw Tiger at Bay Hill a couple of times back when Williams was his caddy. Williams seemed like a huge tool. Would basically call out anyone who sneezed and tell them to STFU. I guess that's what you want in a caddy.

I don't think Angelo was a random. However, I'd bet a ton that Eldrick never wins a major with his son on the bag.

Jack did have a long time caddy but I am pretty sure he won at least one US open with a random guy who had never caddied for a pro event before and for a long time the Masters assigned you a caddy from their staff and you could not bring your own.

When Jack played, there were probably about 15-20 players with better than a 1 in a 100 chance of winning a major.
When Tiger dominated fewer than 15 players had a 1 in a 100 chance of winning a major. Today nearly 50 players have a 1 in a 100 chance. There is much more competition today than in previous decade. Will be more in the future.
The question shouldn't be will Tiger win 5 majors in the next 40? Will anyone win 3 majors in the next 40?

Imo, it's more likely than not that Tiger will not even tie Jack's 18.

If Phil can win the British Open and then look this terrible a few weeks later in the PGA, it just makes me more confident Tiger will get to 18.

Thing is, there's a huge difference between golf and any sport that has playoffs. In basketball, baseball, football, it becomes natural to focus on the playoffs because they are more important than the regular season.

Some individual sports have events that are more important than others. E.g., cycling has the grand tour, which is 3 times longer than normal events and receives more coverage. Tennis has "majors" and non-majors are basically ignored by mainstream US sports media. But the tourneys are longer and the prize pools are bigger.

None of that is really true in golf. Every PGA tourney is on a national TV network. The majors don't pay more than normal tourneys (random trivia: the three highest paying tourneys this year were each won by Tiger--two WGC events and the Players each pay more than the 4 majors) and the fields aren't appreciably different from a typical WGC event or FedEx Cup event.

Yet you have announcers talking about Tiger like his 2013 like it's a failure, even though he's a shoo-in for player of the year.

And the POTY counts a major as worth 3 times as valuable as a non-major! Winning 2 majors is the same as winning 11 regular tourneys!
