I didn't say it didn't matter. I'm saying that his wins, when looked at through the broader spectrum of his statistical performances, look pretty flukey. I'm weighing the evidence.

On the one hand, you've got a guy who has won a couple of majors (and to be fair, other events). On the other you've got that same guy who isn't anywhere near the top tier of any single important statistical category. And who, at the moment, doesn't really seem to have much WIM.

Doesnt mean he won't get hot and win a couple more though. He's young, has his whole career ahead of him and already bagged 2 majors by multiple shots each time. That and his age lead me to believe he will get past this little draught and go on to win more majors.

So you would bet the under at 1.5?
http://golfmajorchampionships.com/multipleWins

That's the entire list of guys who have won multiple major championships. In the last 30ish years, you have something like 20 guys who have won multiple majors. I think you would be hard pressed to find too many guys on that list whose statistics ranked as poorly as Rory's did in every single category.

I would bet under 1.5, yes. Which isn't so much an indictment of Rory as it is of how hard it is to win a golf tournament today.

I would love to hear a reasonable explanation for what makes Tiger by far the greatest front runner in history while also being by far the weakest come from behind player ever. What is it about his game that causes this?

Variance.

Someone else can look back but there probably aren't all that many Sundays at majors where Tiger started the round 1-3 or 4 shots back of the lead(aka a decent shot at coming from behind. Maybe there are, I know some of the more recent majors he may have been in that position, but even if he's like 0 for 8 in those scenarios that is LOL sample size worthy. And the one time he birdies the last 4 or 5 holes vs Rich Beem, Beem birdies a few himself to clip Tiger by 1.

It's not just majors. It is all tournaments. Tiger is virtually unbeatable with a lead but almost never comes from behind on Sunday.

Wut? Tiger is 53-4 with a 54 hole lead/share. So he's won 22 events from behind on Sunday.

Thats good for 27th in the career wins column...

None of those 22 come from behind wins were in a major.

lulz...

As stated, he has plenty of comeback wins, including winning at Pebble after starting the final day 7 strokes back.

How many players have come back from down 7 on Sunday? (hint: very few)

But yeah WEAKEST COMEBACK PLAYER EVER.

He only has more comeback wins than most players have total wins their entire career. (by a mile too)

It is not "tougher to win a major"

Tougher only in the sense that the fields are strong, but even then the fields at say the WGC events and The Players are usually stronger due to the qualifying rules at some of the majors. The Masters is actually a fairly weak field by comparison to say the WGC Cadillac.

Also, explain guys like Shaun Micheel or Ben Curtis. Or hell, Angel Cabrera. Cabrera has 2 PGA Tour wins - both majors. Only 3 other titles worldwide.

You can only play the mental angle, which is strangely enough being used by both the anti-Tiger and anti-Rory camps right now even though they have both shown varying degrees of dominance at major championships before.

If you had to bet on only one golfer for each major for the next 5 years, who would you take?

This is true for 85% of the golfers on tour. If it wasn't they wouldn't be on tour. When any of these guys bring their game, they are elite! The trick is having to do it shot after shot, hole after hole, and day after day in tourneys today.

So the pressure is only on the top 3-5 elite golfers?? Everyone else does not feel that pressure? Typically the better your skills, the better results you have in tough spots against weaker players. The edge tends to get bigger, not smaller. Also, in many of these majors, the field overall tends to be weaker due to special exemptions, etc, especially the Masters.

He'd have more comebacks if he led less often, shoulda sandbagged more

Edit: in all seriousness, how many legitimate comeback opportunities has he had? Does he have a lol final round average when not leading? Given that golfers have limited impact on their opponents' performance, save applying the pressha, I'd guess those who have multiple comeback wins are mostly lucky that the leader(s) played poorly. I don't follow golf particularly closely though

Thats like saying "slower track surface = harder to win" for like the 100m.

How does way more pressure in the majors make it any tougher to win for any particular golfer? Why doesnt it make it easier?

For all the people who are still convinced he's a lock to break the major record, how many more major-less years would it take to convince otherwise?

Like in another 2-3 years from now if he's still stuck on 14 would you change your mind?

He's just building the comeback narrative the haters wanted to see. I'm thinking 59 on Sunday to win by 3.

As much as I dislike the guy you have to think he could squeak out a couple at either the Masters or favorable US or Open location

Question is if he plays 5-7 years more and only has one or two or even no Majors is he still the GOAT?

The greatest peak ever (by far), combined with incredible longevity (leading the Tour in money 16 years apart) make him easily the GOAT.

Lol at people who use a simple counting stat of an arbitrary collection of tournaments to determine the GOAT.

Say what? Considering he hit 9 greens and got it up and down from everywhere on the front nine, he did a good job to only shoot +1.
