i think the average number of klosterman articles read per person is like 2 before they realize that the minutia of his dumb and irrelevant theories isn't that interesting for the most part. at least he's pretty upfront about the fact that reading his stuff is a waste of time

I like Klosterman. Most of his theories are BS and do have holes, but they're usually pretty entertaining reads (this is based on his older stuff and books).

The Internet in 1999 was much different from the Internet of today. It was simply much easier to avoid spoilers back then because you didn't have Facebook and Twitter broadcasting to you constantly.

Was initially excited to see a article on poker today. My excitement dwindled quickly.

Really enjoyed Ken Tremendous breaking down cricket for me. Read sort of like an old school Simmons article, before he apparently got too big to do running diaries of random sports

Yeah, by the first line of the second paragraph it was pretty clear the author did zero actual research.

Unsurprisingly, there are no footnotes accompanying the piece.

Simmons was on the Doug Loves Movies podcast with Jon Hamm and Adam Scott today.

Was pretty funny, worth checking out.

There's a new podcast with the Jacko guy that's pretty funny.

House, JackO and Sal are my three favorite guests in that order. I much prefer the chemistry between host and subject in those interviews than anything else Simmons does regularly. That said, there have been some fantastic one offs (Buzz Bissinger stands out in my mind) and obviously Carolla is great consistently.

This podcast is great. They had one with his poker buddies recently. Ali Nejad and a few others. Was really good.

If you like BS Report you should definitely check out Doug Loves Movies and also 'Skalrbro Country' which is a sports/comedy podcast done by Randy and Jason Sklar of comedy/'cheap seats' fame. Sklarbro Country is probably my favorite weekly podcast.

his podcast about the reality tv fantasy league is so bad. Simmons gets exposed as the spoiled brat whinebag we all knew he was.

this isn't that interesting, but i finally listened to the podcast w/ the guy who wrote the book about espn.

somehow the topic of MNF v SNF came up, and bill said 'wha? you really think SNF is a better product than MNF?' '...yes.' 'wow, i've never thought that. it's just football, i'm there to watch the teams! i don't think i've ever watched a game of football and thought 'that had great production values'. i mean i'm never going to turn a game off because i don't like the commentators'.

anyway, something like that. just behaving like it had never occurred to him to compare the two, and that it was somehow weird to prefer one. like i said, not that interesting. but the annoying fact is i know for certain bill wrote last season that al and chris are by far the best commentators and make every game seem 'bigger' and better.

I agree with the sentiment and the set of 3, but I'd go JackO, Sal, and House. Sometimes House agrees with Simmons a little too much imo.

Yeah, that'd be my order too. I like Simmons with ESPN's NBA guys and also Le Batard, and also Klosterman, tho I would understand anyone not liking Klosterman. I thought Klosterman's Grantland articles on the 5 on 3 and the halfcourt rule were very good.

On the recent DLB cast, when Simmons ignored the "if LBJ is just average LBJ do Heat win" question, DLB asked it again and then pointed it out when Simmons changed the premise or contradicted himself. DLB one of the few who does that.

I LOL'd over the JackO-Blue Boy v Simmons-Gene hockey story.

Simmons: "Fast forward 23 years, Gene's forgot about it, he's got a family & a career, he's moved on---"

JackO: "But the Blue Boy hasn't."

Cliffs on Blue Boy before this latest podcast?"

I've decided footnotes, used in this fashion, makes you a bad writer.
Sports Media Discussion (RIP ESPN) Quote

I actually like footnotes when I'm writing; I find them useful for whenever I have a parenthetical digression that's too long to fit into the main piece without breaking up the narrative.

Anyone here been watching The Killing? Simmons eviscerates it in his piece today... but then so did a bunch of critics.

Simmons column on The Killing was exactly what I wanted when I saw he wrote a column on The Killing.

Sorry nath. Sounds like you might be a ****ty writer.

My main beef with the way grantland is using them is they should be paranthetical asides (and even then, a good editor would just scrap 70% of them because the anecdotes aren't that interesting and the jokes aren't that funny). It totally ruins the flow of the piece because you have to shift focus across the page, then go back and find your place. And then I re-read the last sentence or two to figure out what the hell is going on.

I couldn't quit due to family ties, which is why I've been trying to be as diplomatic as possible about the show when posting under my own name.
