see the video now and have decided that the judge is a huge bitch and prob should lose her job. isnt she supposed to rule without emotion or bias or something?

Just watched the First Take clip on it (http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/93...e-30-days-jail), and clearly these guys didn't see it, which means they shouldn't be arguing over it because clearly the judge is out of line considering he probably did this 10+ times a day when he was in the NFL, and it's really just a habit at this point.

This is a silly comment. Ethics are determined 100% by the culture involved. That's why ethics are different from place to place, and from situation to situation. Its not the judges job to access intent based on the ethical standards of what's acceptable on a football field. Court rooms are 100% serious at all times, and what he did lacked tact. Hate to be a square on this one, but he was out of line and he should have known better. I'm not endorsing the excessive punishment though; clearly it exceeds the crime here. He made a mistake, but is being made an example of based on his past reputation and celebrity status, somewhat unfairly.

I have somewhat of a similar story. People who haven't attended court probably lack the perspective necessary to even comprehend this sort of thing. A friend of mine (who now actually has a masters degree) was in somewhat serious legal trouble a few years ago. Wont get into details, but he was looking at less than the time required to be in a prison, but not something to be summarily dismissed. Anyway, knowing the character (or lack there of) of the person testifying, I smirked and kind of chuckled to myself at times with regards to ridiculous testimony. So, then the judge orders the jury out and after they leave, she points in my direction and says to come up to the stand. Naïve as I can be, I didn't realize she was pointing at me. So I go up there and she admonishes me publically--and pretty harshly. I try to explain that I didn't even realize what I was doing, and doubt anyone else could either. She then said she didn't want to hear it and banned me for the day; explaining that Im lucky she didn't put me in jail for a week, for contempt of court. Anyway, its pretty serious business, and even though the punishment was clearly excessive, im not too surprised. Im sure mjw can elaborate.

AJ,

I've been to court many, many times. Your story is not representative and CJ's is grossly unrepresentative. It's utterly shocking.

So you're saying small court judges have ridiculous egos bordering on god complexes? You don't say.

Law, punishment, justice, ethics, morality: These are not issues or concepts that should go below ego, self, and pride. Judges are not exempt from human behavior. If a judge puts arrogance above his or her job, I can (rightly) lol at them. That judge is acting like a mad woman who hasn't eaten all day and is now looking to get into argument. That simple.

No idea even what Chad Johnson did, but if he had a deal in place, his celebration shouldn't prevent that.

This reminds me of this Florida judge who doubled this young girl's bail because she responded with "adios" to his condescending "bye bye".

lol judges

This was what I was thinking of after I typed my post; whether my story was an anomaly or not. There's some Minnesota judges that need to be disbarred too, then. Judge and court conduct probably varies highly state to state. From my experience though, its been very 100% serious business, to the point where what chad did would be considered egregious.

Not exactly an anomaly to have snappy judges who demand respect, but rejecting plea agreements happens basically never and most judges are not egomaniacs to the degree in your story either.

aj, judges admonish spectators like what happened to you all the time. that's a far cry from rejecting a negotiated plea and sending someone to jail because someone else in the audience laughed.
