Yeah, according to Gretchen, he took off without explanation or warning at some weekend with her family, and then left the company. Walt has since spun the story that Gretchen and Elliott forced him out. (Of course, we also know he subsequently had a job with Sandia Laboratories, and was eventually forced out of there, too, probably for something else to do with his pride and demand that others pay tribute to his greatness.)
I hope we find out what really happened, but to me Gretchen's version of events totally fits with who Walt is. He's a man driven by an enormous ego who flips out at any perceived slight to it. He'd rather burn all his bridges and wallow in self-pity than just get over it.
I wouldn't be surprised if Walt does go after Gretchen and Elliott. He has absolutely nothing to lose now and is only driven by his mammoth ego and pride. He certainly doesn't have anything to lose by publicly gunning them down as retribution for denying him the recognition he craves.
