I disagree because the process worked.
The process, as bad as it seems, is supposed to make it look like the worst outcome is going to happen, so that a few politicians have a strong incentive to make a costly political choice ("betray" their team and get hated by their fellow politicians) in the hope of looking great for their electorate or posterity if they get the right spin with the media. Kicking the can the road, muddling through (or not) with a few votes of majority is how this always goes. The optics will always be bad.

so McCain got out of his deathbed to kick the can down the road in order to make some Republicans look bad?
they were at this until like 2am because it had no chance?
not buying it.

also, how many are going to face any political cost to any of this? saw some speculation the other day that it might hurt like 2 Senators in 2018.
like 90% of ppl couldn't case less about voting records and stuff like that, anything beyond the broad messaging really. it's why we are where we are.

like does soon-to-be Senator Kid Rock have a position on slashing health care and passing the savings on to the rich in the form of a tax cut? something that was apparently supported in 0/50 states. does anyone care? no, probably not, really.

the fact that they even tried it is pretty incredible.

I'm not sure if it's really being appreciated just how comprehensively the Republicans were just ****ed over.

See, the Republicans have been trying to pass these godawful healthcare bills through a process called budget reconciliation, which, among other things, protects the bill from being filibustered in the Senate and only requires a simple majority of 50 votes (rather than 60, which the Republicans don't have).

The thing is, the Senate can only consider one budget reconciliation bill per topic per year. Of course, if the bill dies in committee and never comes to an official vote, it doesn't count- which is why they've been able to keep hammering away at the issue.
This bill, though, was allowed to come to the Senate floor, because the Republicans thought they'd secured the votes. Collins, Murkowski and the Democrats would vote no, everyone else would vote yes, and Pence would break the tie. And then McCain completely ****ed them. And it was almost certainly a calculated move; he voted to allow the bill to come to the floor. Had McCain allowed it to die in committee, McConnell could have come back with yet another repeal bill; but he let it come to a vote, and now they can't consider another budget reconciliation bill for the rest of the fiscal year. The Senate needs 60 votes to pass any kind of healthcare reform now.
could help explain what McCain's angle was here

they can try again in October, but still a decent FU to Drumpf & frands, if intentional

I get the feeling Turtle is playing a losing game of whack-a-mole.
If passage would be detrimental to these Senators what do they gain by being on the record as in favor?

Stupid question but when does the senate fiscal year end?

edit: October is new year. Yeah damn, McCain did screw them over pretty good on that 1.

Probably for the best tho, they weren't getting anywhere fast and now can move onto stuff that actually does poll better than 20%.

If the Dems can make a run at some governor's mansions in the next cycle maybe more states could get on the Medicaid expansion and then the whole thing becomes totally unassailable?

I'm guessing the divorce has more to do with the fact he is coked out of his mind rather than that he reps Trump. Probably was icing on the cake though.

Some kind of white powder on the cake, anyway.
