CDL,

loling at Lochte isn't a sign of greater problems within society. Accusing rape victims of lying is.

Accusing rape victims of lying is indeed horrible. I would never suggest otherwise.

Lolling at Lochte is also fine, but only if we know he is wrong. Why was no one lolling at him 3 days ago? Everyone was talking about how horrible it was. Maybe people should learn to stop forming opinions on situations where there are facts that will be revealed over time when all we have is someone's word.

just looking at it bureaucratically, to pull two olympic athletes off an airplane for something like this there would need to be some sort of reasonable certainty that something else happened otherwise no sane chain of command is going to bless off on doing that. nobody with anything to lose by pulling them is going to have his/her career survive the fallout if he/she is wrong to do it.

this too. These clowns fuel it all. Stop reporting things like "Lochte robbed" unless you know it happened. There is literally no good reason to not responsibly report it as "Lochte says that he was robbed" or "Lochte's mom says that he was robbed, but still awaiting statement from Lochte and police"

Umm, the initial report was "Lochte's mom says that he was robbed, but IOC and Lochte say it didn't actually happen." Then Lochte said it actually did happen.

and then the reports transformed to "Lochte robbed in Rio" SIMPLY BECAUSE HE CLAIMED HE WAS ROBBED but do we know if he was robbed in Rio? How did we know he was robbed in Rio 36 hours ago but not know it now? Facts don't change. Either he was robbed or he only said he was robbed, but I certainly saw some of the same media outlets reporting it as an actual robbery and now reporting it as if it might not have happened. Just because he said he was robbed doesn't mean the media should say he was robbed.

RIO

I know a "lolyoungstown" is incoming, but most gas stations around here have an overweight, 50-something guy with a $20 security guard uniform standing in the corner reading the newspaper. to a person, their answers to "what do you do if someone robs the place?" have been, "let them and call the police when it's safe"...

so yeah, doesn't make it any less RIO, but I thought security guards like that were standard...

Three days ago it was just one more story about someone being robbed in Rio. On the surface it seemed to line up with similar stories we've been hearing about these games. The majority of people aren't going to take the time to parse the words and distinguish between "Lochte was robbed" and "Lochte claims he was robbed" or "Lochte's mom says he claims he was robbed" because most people don't care that much. The story only really got interesting once the Brazil authorities seemed to dispute the report and started getting serious about investigating it. Then Clark and others began speculating on how weird the swimmers' story seems to be, and what could motivate them to fabricate it. Seems like a reasonable question to me.

If you changed "Lochte" to "Ledecky" and "robbed" to "raped" in this story (with all the other aspects remaining exactly the same) then clark would be furious about anyone questioning the rape claim at this point. Just because the alleged crime is robbery and the alleged victim is a male that clark doesn't like he decides it is ok to rally against the alleged victim and say its all made up.
"So he was raping me, and I was like, 'Whatever'"?

it's fine to lol at Lochte bc there is enough in his story / contrary evidence that it's pretty clear at the least he is fabricating large amounts of fiction (though I suspect this is all based on some kernel of something real happening)

it's also fine to lol at Brazil bc escalating this into an international incident can't be in top 10,000 uses of their resources. if they want to call these guys liars and defend their honor they can do that without yanking guys off planes and taking passports

Well, if anything, you've successfully changed the story here from lol Lochte to lol CDL.

So maybe drunk Lochte just confused security guard for "Fake Police" and getting robbed at gunpoint with being told to GTFO?

pulling them off the airplane was just a result of them not obeying the law. they we're told not to leave the country. your argument still works since for them to forbid them from leaving the country they must have something solid on them.

You know, like next morning; "Uh, who was that guy we fought? Was that like a fake cop trying to rob us?"

Then later that day you're like, "Wait, did we beat the **** out of that guy and rob him?"

Happens all the time...

That's actually incorrect. Lochte and Feigen were told not to. The other guys hadn't even issued police statements yet when they got yanked off the plane
