I used to agree completely but to have Oregon at an average ranking of 8, something is wrong.

Not allowing the computer ratings to use margin of victory is what is wrong.

that was a fitting picture. Kiffin staring out into the distance with an empty Coliseum in the background... the future of USC football.

Yep, then idiots complain about running up the score, but teams still do that to impress human voter so taking it out just made the comps worse without reducing running up the score one bit.

Seems to me that if they are worried about teams running up the score, they could just cap the margin at 21 points in the computers.

Well played sir. I love how people don't seem to realize that computers can only do what programmers allow them to do.

Exactly, there is a smart and a dumb way of using MOV.

A 40point win and a 60 point win are basically the same thing. You could easily do it in tiers

< 7, 7-14, 14-21, 21-28, 28+

This is of course flawed, as some 10 point games are never in doubt and some are ultra close the whole way, but treating a win by a single point the same as a win by 50 is just absurd.

you know what else is wrong? the computers only have 2/3 of the data. They're not designed to make sense in october. but people talk about them like they have some glaringly obvious flaw because they don't agree with the coaches' ladder polls.

That's another great point. They really should wait even further into the season to release the initial computer polls and the BCS. We get it about 1/2 way into the season now, should wait until about 3/4th of the way, so like your first BCS rankings would be coming out next Monday.

And for that matter the human polls should also wait until many weeks into the season. The preseason polls, which are largely guesses, have a way of adding some "stickiness" to the rankings as some voters are way more hesitant to move teams around than they should be.

This is absolutely true. 2005 rankings... USC #1, Texas #2 from preseason till final rankings before bowl games. Without a loss it can be so hard to budge from the previous weeks rankings.

Do the formulas take into account the games that are still left to play and who those games will be against?

Having a hard time finding a path that sees any one-loss Big10 team in the NC game.

If the current undefeated teams fall ( Boise, Oregon, Auburn, and TCU/Utah, then you'd think a one loss Pac-10 (Oregon ) team would be playing a one-loss Bama or LSU.

Iowa is the best Big10 team left, and they have 2 losses.

Doesnt 1 loss arizona get in with that scenario over 1 loss oregon? Would obviously mean arizona beats oregon. Only game i really see oregon losing tbh

It's not that hard to find a path, just remember there would be people involved--many of whom still think of the Big10 as the #1 or close #2 conference and the Pac10 as the #4 conference.

But besides, he didn't say "Ohio State goes to the NC game" he said "Ohio State gets talked up constantly as having a good shot to go." Which is 100% correct and I'm sure would be accompanied by "..and Terrelle Pryor has made great strides as a quarterback since the Wisconsin game."
