in the nhl, very little. in the minors you'll just make kids upset, take unnecessary timeouts. some scrawny kid will take a big hit from a bully, gets in his face and get an automatic 4 minutes, while the bully goes free.

whatever the loss is that would be associated with the ridiculous measures to get facewashes out of the game.

fwiw, if I am the coach, and one of my kids gives someone else a facewash, I am auto-moving him down a line. if the ref takes it out of my hands and gives a double minor, I am meeting him in the parking lot.

what problem? I'm still not understanding the motivation for removing a non-issue from the game. A facewash is such a minor incident, it doesn't require league attention and it certainly doesn't require it to be about the only minor penalty to be a auto call 100% of the time. That just seems beyond dumb to me.

It would open a big can of worms. I just don't get why you think the facewash is a huge problem, but trash talking is not?

I've never said facewash should be legal. They shouldn't, and they aren't. Just like calling a guys wife a dyke is got legal, and neither is spitting. But facewashing is just a little pesk type tool to get under players skin. Just like calling a guys wife a dyke. They are all unsportsmanlike, and they are all currently penalties under the rules. But, none of them (exception of spitting) should be a penalty 100% of the time.

The fact a facewash is very visible, does not make a good argument to call it more than the other pesk tools. Geddy has it right imo, you have to leave it t to the ref to communicate with the players and let them know where the line is, and where they are.

I think a more interesting penalty would be for "intential scrumming".

Basically any player skating towards an opposing player in an "aggressive fashion" after the whistle.

All facewashes happen in these scrums after the play, so just get rid of the scrums. 90% of the time its the defencemen rushing in to be a hero and 'save' his goalie from the opponent's forward who is 90% of the time just standing there catching his breath.

How often do you see those forwards 'hacking' at the goalie after the play? Just about never, but it's still legal for the defenceman to rush in and cause a ruckus.

fwiw guys, if a ref sees someone spit on another player, it's an automatic match penalty. That's extremely frowned upon.

The issue I have with this facewash 4 min autocall is the reasoning behind it. You guys all saw the clip; it was included in the head contact montage. I mean, come on, that is the most ridiculous reasoning ever for implementing an auto double minor for a facewash.

These are the kinds of kneejerk reactions to the recent head trauma that lots of us were afraid of, because the reasoning behind these reactions is ridiculously nonsensical.
