The first number is the hollow - the bottom edge of the skate blade is shaped like an upside-down "U" to let water travel underneath the blade as you skate. So theoretically, only the outer edges of the bottom of the skate are in contact with the ice.

So, when you're skating and need to turn, the outer edge on your inside foot bites into the ice to carve out a groove and you can shift your weight to go one way or the other. The more extreme the angles of those outside edges relative to the ice, the harder your blade will bite the ice.

How do you get a harder angle? By decreasing the hollow. The hollow is basically what you see above. 99% of rando skaters who take their skates in to get sharpened will have a 1/2" or 5/8" hollow.

larger hollows are good for "gliders" and straightaway speed because the edges dont dig into the ice as much. Also, larger guys (relative to normal, not relative to NHL) need larger hollow because their weight will also dig the edges into the ice. smaller hollows are good for quick cutting and turns, acceleration, and smaller people who won't dig into the ice as much.

The second number is profile. I'm starting to get lazy with posting this so i'll just give you the short version. Basically, it describes two features of your blade. 1) the hockey blade isn't flat to the ice, it's rockered. i.e. the middle is flat, but the front and back ends come up a little off the ice. like a rocking chair. this allows for shifting weight when trying to skate forward or back. So the profile tells how much of the blade will be flat at the bottom. The second number is where the rocker is centered. i.e. if the rocker is centred at the back, more of the blade will contact the ice at the back and your weight will be at the front, so it will feel like youre skating downhill. Good for forwards, bad for D. D spend more time skating backwards, so they need a balanced rocker. Forwards are usually always moving forward, so they have a slight forward rocker. So this column just tells the equipment guys how each guy likes his skate profiled if he has a preference.

The last column is just the brand of the blade (not the steel part, the white/black part) they're using in case it cracks or wears out.

For the goalers, the cowling is the hard white (sometimes black - black was really popular in the late 90s) shell that covers the front and inside of the skate boot and holds the blade.

Goalie skates are molded differently, they are lower cut and the cowling/skate usually is sold in the store as a unit. i.e. anyone not playing hockey seriously probably doesn't even know that the boot and cowling come apart.

Players skates are as follows:
Light Speed: Bauer
E Blade: Reebok
Tuuk Custom: Bauer
ICM: oooooold wow I can't believe they're still using these. obv Guerin.
Graf: a european company, softest boot you'll ever wear.

A couple things: some guys pay attention to this stuff, some guys don't. Some of those players will have no idea what their own rocker or profile is, the trainer is just expected to know. if he gets traded, they'll send over his old skates and the trainer will figure it out. Other guys are complete psychos when it comes to this stuff, they know every detail of their skates from top to bottom, down to laces waxed or not waxed. Great great effort is spent balancing customized specs on the skate with the worst possible outcome of them all - that you stick out in some way: skate lace colour, skate blade style, who knows. Cause then you get carved up big time at praccy.

Another thing. Mildly interesting that they actually put their names up. On every hockey team, you have no name. you are a number. You have no name. You need a new jock? you put your number up on the white board, like: #29 - Jock" It means #29 needs a new jock, so when the trainers come around they'll bring one out for you.

One of my favourite chirps was to put up something like "#14 - set of balls" or something even less classy.

I was really mature as a teenager.

Gamblor, ever hear anything about FBV and/or combo radius?

yeah, we had a little talk about it earlier. search the regular season thread for "flat bottom v" or something like that. a lot of pros and juniors are using it now (i'm pretty out of touch with the hockey world right now, but i can call up some guys on the equipment crew and ask if you want).

i've heard lots of good things. but its still too expensive for beer leaguers to really get into. it might be a fad but i think it'll stick around. maybe 10-20% of guys are using it (ymmv)

i am still breaking in new skates, and i feel like they suck. i got them sharpened at the ice-rink, but pretty much noone there knows what they are doing. they can't accomodate anything but the regular 1/2 hollow. i found a place that sharpens by mail, and it's more expensive, but i honestly just want to feel like i can take a tight turn out there. the place actually does a "consult" which is like 20 questions about your skating ability and your skates. for me they recommended FBV with a combo radius, which sounds great. otoh, almost anything would be an improvement over my current state of affairs.

also, when i bought my skates, the holder does not have replaceable blades. if i had known, i definitely would have picked something else. is it worth replacing the holders for a once-or-twice-a-week skater?
05-21-2010 , 11:29 AM
I really doubt there is much about your skates that is holding you back.

I've been on skates for close to 30 years and don't ask for a specific blade profile, I just adjust to the difference a new skate or new blade has.

There are specific blade profiles that are good for specific skating styles...but I play men's league hockey so I don't really care.

Also, why do you want to replace your blades? a one-or-twice-week skater should get many years out of a blade. I've always had the rivets holding the holder on give out before I needed new blades, and had to get new skates all together.

it will soon be impossible for me to get blades sharpened unless i drive for 50 miles or mail them in. it would be infinitely more convenient if i could remove the blades. that's the main reason.

yes, it's possible there's nothing holding me back except myself. i was happy with the skates for 2 sessions, and then they started sliding sideways, braking is no longer sharp. there's no rattling or chattering, it just feels like they are dull. i got them sharpened twice since then, but the feeling on the skates is the same.

Devin you do know that you can just have the Tuuks, or holders riveted back onto the boot of your skate right?? It is like a few bucks a rivet so it's a hell of a lot cheaper then buying new skates all together. esp if they aren't worn out or you only use them a couple times a month. And for Sylar, it's pretty easy to tell if your blades are sharp. A good blade shouldn't have big knicks in it, and you should be able to scrape nail off your finger nails up and down the blade. If your nail slides off w.o removing any of itself you have obv. dull spots. This is a fairly standard test but isn't the end all be all. Obv. different style skaters prefer different hollows, and how they have there skates rockered ( front to back) depending on there particular stance. Like you stated though it is hard to find someone sharpening skates that really cares about what they are doing, and knows how to do it right. If you sharpen your skates a lot it's probably worth buying your own sharpener and learning how to do it yourself. Maybe sharpen your buddies, make some extra coin. Or else they have this thing called a V-stick. It is simply a temporary fix on your skate blades if they go to bad during a game or something. I believe it's relatively inexpensive. Anyways, Get em Hawks

ah, I'm in Canada so that reason never occured to me. I don't know if they still make them or are on the market, but you should look into t-blades (or something close to that). They are blades that you don't sharpen, just replace them when they get dull. The stay sharp longer then regular blades.

Yea, I didn't want to go into a big explanation that because I used to not dry my skates out properly to bottoms would eventually rot and be unable to hold the rivets.

I now dry them out, and have a source for free skates...
05-21-2010 , 06:34 PM
^^ right on, I ' dont dry my stuff out either. Well I actually don't really play anymore so I don't need to. Nice find on the free skates though. I know new ones are like $500-$700 probably now for top of the line.
