what have the habs done that is any good, besides lock up a mediocre team for the next 5 years? they're not a well-run organization. they ran hot in 2008, and maybe they will run hot again someday.

i guess gainey is around the middle of the pack in terms of being a good general manager.

they're in 6th place despite everyone on the team (except Plekanec, Gorges and Moen) getting injured at one point. we currently have 6 forwards who started the season in Hamilton ffs.

they're also in 6th place despite a horrid, horrid penalty differential, they're being outshot by 300, they have a 12-6 overtime record, they've played 2 more games than most teams, they're in the weaker conference, they have a negative goal differential, and everything points to them being a thoroughly average team. this isn't a team that suddenly becomes great without all the injuries - it's a team that becomes decent without all the injuries. plus there's two goalies each having an excellent (numerically) season.

How much of that is due to a backup goalie playing out of his mind?

Triumph you seem to think that the way to evaluate a team is by its 5on5 play only. Goalies and special teams are also part of the team.

Oh and all shots aren't created equal.

5 on 5 play is, to me, the best predictor of future success, and the habs are terrible at it. they have gotten excellent goaltending, and they've had a great power play. if those things continue, they could make it to the playoffs and surprise someone. i'm not counting on it, though.

241-176-46-7 (.569) as the GM, taking over a team that had missed the playoffs 4 of the previous 5 years. He made the playoffs 4/5 years and is on pace to make them again this year.

I doubt that our next GM will do much better.

i doubt it too because of all the terrible contracts gainey left in his wake.

shmeh, if you think gainey's done a good job in montreal, you have terminally low expectations. he's hit quite a few doubles with organizational development but no home runs. and he's got a team with a super-high cap commitment for the next 2 years at least. there's some excellent D prospects in the system but the forwards are all bad. it's an average team and it's probably going to stay that way.

He didn't do a great job but it's not like he had the luxury of taking a couple of years off and stockpile the top 5 picks like the Hawks, Penguins and Capitals. The goal here is to make the playoffs every year, so that leads to a lot of short term fixes and while some of them have sucked (Gomez), I think he has generally done a good job (trading Balej for Kovalev, trading Rivet for Gorges and the Pacioretty pick, etc.)

that's all fair - but it's not just about taking 'a couple of years' off. there's certainly some good moves in there, but some regrettable ones as well (e.g. ribeiro for niinamaa - while i also hated ribeiro he's turned into a nice player).

the habs have been stuck in stasis ever since lucksacking their '93 Cup. it's unfortunate that that seems strangely eternal - i'm playing a session now, but i think breaking down the habs league-wide finish since then would be interesting. it's stunningly mediocre; symbolic of their top player of those years, saku koivu, who while he is a very solid centerman, is just not a superstar.

yeah me too. i just want to see kovalchuk's first goal - the rangers shut him down and held him to only 8 shots on net, but i'd just like for them to get it out of the way.
