Different games with different rules.

I'm finding it hard to find the right comparison because they are very similar but the differences completely change the game. It's like saying lacrosse and field hockey are the same because they involve similar fields, both require sticks and the aim is to get a ball into a goal.

Like NFL, rugby league has a set number of downs or "tackles" (6) but the play starts from where the player is tackled and the next play starts as soon as the downed players stands up and rolls the ball under foot. In the time between plays the defending team must get back to 10m from the downed player and reset the defensive line. Rugby union on the other hand doesn't have a restriction on the number of plays in their drive forward and the ball is only turned over if they lose it, kick it or are penalised. They also don't stop to play the ball, just hand it off from the ground and the defensive line only goes back 3m (I think).

There are many more differences, to the point where I love rugby league and find union terribly ****.

As others have said, league and union are completely different sports with some crossover in skills, equipment, and rules. Maybe a good comparison is pool versus snooker. (Another possible comparison is boxing versus MMA.)

League is more physical and brutal than Union.

Simplistically League is about running full speed at (or around) the defence whereas Union is more about grinding your way up the field in a sloppy sort of way.

Much bigger hits in league than in Union which is why Hayne should be more equipped to handle the hits in NFL though I've seen a YouTube video of the biggest hits in NFL and they were like car accidents.....not sure if those types of hits are even legal anymore but they were frightening.

Union is way more complex. And requires a lot more tactics and strategy. Union has the running and hitting (but less often and less hard, I concede) along with rucks, scrums and line outs. All of which are games within the game. It's more of a thinking man's game.

Agree also that league is slightly more likely to generate cross overs to NFL.

If we're talking about rugby, I'd trust this guy. I have a feeling he knows what he's talking about.
