Tomlinson is done. Name one RB who had a career worst season at age 30 then bounced back at 31.
I don't disagree with your point here, however SD's run blocking was so horrid that I think a lot of people *might* be thinking he has fallen off more than he has. Sproles was only getting like 3.6 ypc as well there, and he did miss several games due to injury for the first time in his career during the regular season. Also while sproles was a better option as recieving back, Tomlinson could still be an above average at catching balls out of the backfield if that became his roll again.
I am not saying that I expect him to become an above average starting quality back again... If I had to venture a guess I would say maybe he is currentley an above average #2 back on most teams. But when you factor in experience, helping younger RB's, and his rep. as a good locker room guy I think he could still be an asset for some contenders. Just to use a somewhat extreme anology, take Thomas Jones, a RB over 30 who doesn't seem to be on the decline yet.
People point to the fact that he got less touches earlier in his career and say he a "young 31", which may very well be true. Well he's running behind one of the top 3 o-lines in football, while LT is running behind one of the 3 worst (in terms of run blocking) From the games I saw this year, I think LT could have been an average starting back last year if he actually had holes to run through. Anyway, it will be interesting to see where he goes, there do not seem to be any good fits...
The Pats have too many RB's, I think they need to focus on improving elsewhere. The saints don't need more RB's unless they let Bush + either Bell or Thomas go, which seems unlikley. Maybe if the the Ravens let Willis go he would be a good guy to spell Ray Rice, so maybe that's an option? I'm suprised Houston said they aren't interested as they seem like the best fit by far. They don't have a single established elite back on that team, and the whole slew of RB's has had SERIOUS ball protection issues. Foster had a good game or two towards the end of the year but it seems like LT could be valuable on the field and with the development of their young backs. I would have said Atlanta would be a good fit to give Turner a few less carries, but Snelling has been an adequate backup and I don't know that they need him there... He could really sit on the market for a while.
