I get a little annoyed at all these comments that seem to attribute a lot of their success to the hording of upperclassmen.

There were thousands of these guys in the portal, and most of them were total trash. And the guys Cig got from Kent State and Ohio and Navy or whatever, any blue blood could've had them if they wanted.

It's not like Cig figured out one easy hack to make an awesome team before everybody else - he figured out that 4th and 5th year 3* mid major players were undervalued relative to 5* sophs who sat on the bench at Alabama, which basketball coaches have been figuring out over the last couple of years as well, but he either (a) somehow managed to find 10-15 absolute diamonds in the rough out of the thousands of options, or (b) was somehow able to create a program where you can take 10-15 3* 5th years who have never met each other and get them to very quickly play the smartest, most disciplined, most organized team football as a cohesive unit that has ever been played.

Either one of those is absurdly impressive and hasn't been remotely replicated by anyone else.

Two things can be true.

Cignetti is a great coach, great evaluator of talent, and also successfully gamed this system.

I don't blame him one bit. He hit a grand slam and should reap all the rewards. Put him in the HOF for winning a title at IU.

FTR, GB, I don't think a single coach in the NCAA cares that a 5th [or 6th] year senior was a 3* vs a 4* or etc. There's obviously plenty of tape on him by now against college opposition, not HS sophomores.

one of the recruiting sites (i think on3?) is re-ranking all current players and comparing to when they first were recruited.

Most likely Cignetti has backed into some kind of simple algorithm that works (1) for reasons that aren't fully understood yet and (2) because it's low-hanging fruit that no one else has caught onto. Probably some combination of sorting the portal by PFF grade and/or other grading services / metrics. It's not like you're gonna watch film on thousands of dudes to pick out a few uncut gems.
