Is anyone going to Spring Training this year? I should be in both AZ (with the other Fangraphs/THT writers) as well as FL (for other stuff).

AZ mid-March, FL late Feb (may not be available).

CMON CHEN is a Royal again.

Never been to ST, but I have heard good things. Actually, I may have been when I was like 8, but I don't recall much.

Michael Young retired.

I'm hoping to road trip to AZ even though my favorite teams are both Florida.

I hit some spring training games every march in AZ. Used to go to different parks every year, but my friend that comes into town then is a lolCubs fan so we hit Hohokam the most. New park this year though!

Can't remember if we covered this already, but anyone else find it interesting that the A's and Rays paid for closers/bullpen help on the FA market vs their usual mode of operation? Is it a 1 time aberration due to no high level minor league pen help for them or is it the start of a new trend?
01-31-2014 , 03:15 PM
I think the consensus that I've come across is that both think they can flip them at the deadline for some assets, so it's better than nothing.

Read that Dynasty Draft thread, getting pumped for 2014. Is it recency bias on my part, or are we in dang near a golden age for young talent?

Calling it now, Padres will win one of the 2 WC spots, prob lose to the Cardinals in that game but this rotation is deep

There was a Fangraphs article on this very subject yesterday.

probably has lots to do with less steroids = fewer 32-40 year olds putting up monster seasons = necessity to call up younger guys more quickly

Not to mention that there are a couple generational talents just starting their careers.

I’ve gone this far without even mentioning the win curve. The Rays should be right in the thick of things in the AL playoff race. The same goes for the A’s, and both teams are capable of winning their divisions. Because of their respective budgets, they in theory can’t afford market rates of $/WAR. But at the same time, each win is worth more to them, given their high-leverage positions. Each additional win provides a significant boost to their playoff chances, and that’s the whole point. So it makes some sense to invest in good relievers, because it makes sense to invest in good players.

Good points about the Red Sox.

I agree the O's 2nd in offense in their division.
I'm not sold on the Yankees quite yet but no way they will be really bad. (Assuming you mean win less than 75 games) They haven't done that in 20 years. Doubt it's going to happen this year if it didn't happen last year.

Worst case scenario is they win 80 games IMO. We can LOL all day about Jeter and A-Rod but both missed most of the season last year. Same w/ Teixiera. Probably wishful thinking but Jeter/Tex this year can at least make up some of Cano's production. It was either be under $189 or go balls to the wall. If the Rockies suck, I wouldn't be shocked if they trade for Tulo to replace Jeter.

really hard to imagine the yanks putting together a competitive offer for tulo. with his friendly contract, teams are coming to be coming out of the woodworks to blow away whatever gary sanchez + random scrubs the yanks could muster up.

If the Rockies suck? LOLOL. Sorry Rockies fans. Of course, like Houston fans I'm sure they are in hibernation mode until their team is .500+.

The difference is Houston has a plan. The Rockies... eh...

Agreed. To be fair, though, the Rockies management is working from a deficit trying to develop starting pitching that can be effective in Coors field. I think they've actually be quite inventive & dedicated in their scouting of young pitching; they've tried a handful of strategies. Just none of them have been very successful thus far.

Not really sure there's a lot else they can do other than keep on keeping on, or completely switch to loading up on offense & maybe some bullpen arms and just fill in with the Bronson Arroyo types that are happy to just be signed somewhere.
02-01-2014 , 08:37 AM
Yanks won't trade for Tulo before Jeter retires. Also... oh wait. This is all in response to Endo. Nevermind.

thinking about betting my roll on the redsox finishing last in the a.l.

there must be ton of value there, we all know last year was juste variance and they have a terrible rotation, but average guys dont know that cuz they won the world seriessss.

anyone know the odds?
02-01-2014 , 01:08 PM
Better than you're giving them credit for?
02-01-2014 , 01:09 PM
Last in al or al east? I will take your action

Tulo in ny would be pretty amazing.
