MLB will add the Negro Leagues to its official records

from the article:

"more than 3,400 players from 7 leagues that operated between 1920 and 1948 will now be considered major leaguers in a move that will shake up record books"

Josh Gibson will be awarded the single season record for batting average as he batted .441 for multiple Negro league teams in 1943

Quote:
Negro Leagues -- plural because there were so many Black leagues between 1920 and 1948, often unconnected to one another -- are now the honored, rehabilitated equivalent of the National and American Leagues. The 1943 New York Yankees won the World Series with a 154-game schedule. According to the Negro Leagues database Seamheads.com, in 1943, Josh Gibson is credited with hitting .441 in 342 plate appearances, which wouldn't qualify for a batting title. Because of lost record-keeping, Gibson's walks are recorded -- but his strikeouts are not.
Quote:
Negro Leagues because of their necessity and because the scheduling was so irregular -- it was difficult to determine which games were official games and which were exhibitions
Quote:
The better remedy, of course, would have been to tell the truth. But America does not do the truth very well. A century from now, because of what baseball has done, the record books will show an equality, a form of separate-but-equal fiction that at first glance absolves MLB of its active hand in destroying the careers of Black baseball players -- and a Black institution. Historians will have to circumvent the now-public record to recover the truth.
Quote:
The Negro Leagues also contained a certain irreverent beauty in their independence from Major League Baseball. They didn't need baseball's validation to be special.

They should have kept them separate as well as removing stats from pre integration MLB from the records and called that era "The Ignorance League"

I didn't know there were so many different leagues.

I read an interesting Howard Bryant article (I don't recall if that's the one quoted in txdome's post, which I found independently as well. I think not but I'm stoned) pontificating that in 100+ years, those generations won't realize the travesty that was the Negro Leagues, because those stats will have been part of MLB for their entire lives. And this is baseball trying to absolve itself in future opinion.

Wondering if anyone can help out with some math. Say a (theoretical) player had a 100% z-swing rate and a 0% chase rate, assuming robot umps. 0 "bad" swings and 0 "bad" takes. If his contact rate were league average (i.e. we'd use zone-contact rate and not overall contact rate), he'd make contact with ~87% of swings.
41.2% of pitches were rulebook strikes this year.
27.8% of total strikes were fouls in 2019, so consider that for 2-strike fouls. vs. 2-strike whiffs. Assume an equal distribution of fouls across 0-strike, 1-strike and 2-strike counts (even though there are more 2-strike fouls than 0/1 strike fouls). I realize that there are O-swings and Z-swings making up that number, but whatever.

How often should this player walk? Do we have enough info?

This made me think of the Sopranos episode where Artie is trying to convince Charmaine it's a good idea to go into business with Tony selling Vesuvio's sauce retail, and Charmaine says, "they won't even let you use the Vesuvio name!"

Artie says, market research shows that product names starting with a V turn the public off because of the vaginal connotation.

Padres getting Blake Snell. Seems like a win-win Pads get a middle of the rotation starter and the Rays reload AGAIN.

I appreciate the effort, but the Darvish move is a dud. Snell and Yu are good for some depth, but ain't gonna get a rang.
