Saw on main yahoo page.

11 seasons with Montreal, 6 with Chicago where he won an MVP, but nope, former Red Sox.
that's kind of hilarious, we were really happy to have him though, was during a time we weren't so good and being able to watch one of the greats play out his days and occasionally show you he still had it

kind of forget about him, but it was pretty amazing watching him come through from time to time

Paul Konerko's career numbers don't look as good as I would imagine.

Reached 3+ WAR just three times, topping out at 4.7.

That is really surprising to me that he didn't even get to 30 career WAR. I would've guessed over 40 easily.

I had a similar realization the other day about Derrek Lee. I remembered him having a lot more seasons like his 7.7 bWAR in 2005, but he actually only topped 3.5 one other time.

I remember Carl Everett prevented Mike Mussina's would-be perfect game as the 27th batter. Mussina got the next batter for the 1-hit shutout but that was brutal.

2 strikes too. Losing perfect 1 strike away is brutal.

re: Konerko...he was an incredibly underrated hitter and the greatest thing about his career is that his best offensive 3 season arch came at the very end of his career. His WAR is low because he was a very poor defender and a painfully slow baserunner.

Poor defense is the cause of many a low WAR total.

How many guesses will it take this thread to get the 1995 AL position player leader in bbref-WAR

If you just know it off hand for some reason, please at least spoiler it

I think it could be a pretty high number of guesses before anybody gets it

1. Mystery, 8.3
2. Albert Belle and Edgar Martinez, 7.0
4. Chuck Knoblauch, 6.7
5. Tim Salmon, 6.6

MVP Mo Vaughn had 4.3. Knoblauch finished 17th in MVP voting

Randy Johnson had 8.6 WAR

I guess it's not obvious guys like Griffey or Thomas then. Lofton? Thome? Manny?

that wasnt the year Olerud flirted with .400, was it?

Yeah, I have no good memory of that season, so Ill jump on the Lofton bandwagon. I thought Ripken was still good then?

Edit: I really suck, I was just looking at that season for some reason, as both the MVP voting of that year and the player in question have recently clicked links. Yet I still had 0% chance of getting it.

That was too early for ARod or Nomar. Plus you wouldn't have prefaced that way.

BJ Surhoff is my next guess. (I just like the name.)

mlb.com did a re-vote for the 95 AL MVP a couple weeks ago. Vaughn still finished ahead of Chad's guy, but neither cracked the top 5.
Spoiler:
Missing 6% of games in a shortened season is probably the guy's biggest knock, but the article doesn't really go into detail.

Just looked it up, I, nor anyone else, would guess him. I think even giving his position he goes unguessed. He had good offensive numbers that year, but looks like played some wicked shortstop.

Could've given me his team, position, age, and first name and I'd still be stumped.
