Longoria, who did not play in the Rays' 4-0 loss to Baltimore, spoke at length about the team's chronically low attendance, calling it "disheartening" and "embarrassing."
"We've been playing great baseball all year. Since I've been here in [2006], the fans have wanted a good baseball team. They've wanted to watch a contender," Longoria told reporters. "And for us to play good baseball for three years now, and for us to be in a spot to clinch again and go to the playoffs, we're all confused as to why it's only 15,000 to 20,000 in the building."
I guess the state of Florida is just a lost cause for baseball. Ship 'em out of there. Move one to Vegas and one to New York. Too bad that would never happen.
Longoria's absolutely right, I'm glad he spoke up about the poor attendance in Tampa. The main thing I've heard is that the stadium is in a bad location and is generally crappy, but that seems like a BS excuse at this point. That region has had one of the best teams in MLB for the last three years, not to mention a trip to the World Series, and they can't seem to get any kind of permanent attendance boost regardless of their accomplishments.
WTF is going on? Are there no baseball fans in that region? I bet there have been plenty of great teams with crappy stadiums that have fared a heck of a lot better at the box office. And yet, Tampa's stadium will magically fill up for playoff games. That is really depressing.
Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've even met an actual Rays fan before....
