This was a pretty odd play call, since that's a very makeable FG to seal the win but the field was wet and i guess he didn't want to risk giving JAX the ball on the 40 and since the two offenses were basically non-existent I don't think a punt was nearly as bad here as it seems. As it turned out the punt landed inside the 5 and bounced off a panther into the endzone.

This doesn't really belong here but we don't have a "post here when coaches flip their **** when their teams do something obviously stupid (like fall for the "draw em offsides on fourth and short" gimmick)

Les Miles accepts the penalty giving WV 3rd and 19.

WTF Les they're going to punt, why give them a chance.

Of course LSU gets the miracle INT because that is just how Les rolls. He's like the Forrest Gump of coaching, blissfully ignorant yet everything always works out somehow.
I am a huge les hater and like the Forrest gump comparison

WVirginia couldnt move the ball... 10 yards is good

Think huoston let Ingram score that last saints Td when they were down 1

Saints were gonna wind clock down and kick gimme field goal

A second and 1 from the 15 or whatever would have been FAR superior to scoring TD

Only huge running hole of the night for the saints between the tackles
Really think they let em score

After all administrative stops of play (ie. measurment, official time out, penalty, etc.) the play clock will start with 25 secs. upon the referee's ready for play whistle.
No it had 20 sec. They ran up to the line and snapped it really quick after they blew the whistle after the measurement. The announcers were making a big deal out of it.

I think they might have been trying to catch the Chiefs off-guard or something. But it was obvious the Chiefs were completely jammed up to stop the sneak. I thought they were just going to do hard cadences for 20 sec, try to get us to jump, then call TO.

That game was played in a huge downpour. Kicking a FG is obviously the play under ideal conditions but they may not have deemed it makeable under those circumstances.

Wondering what Kubiak would have done had Schaub just thrown an incompletion on 3rd down. Then you have 4th and 15, the 2min warning and two timeouts, but Houston hadn't stopped Brees all half.

Also, 3nd and 5 from the 25 and TE is called for OPI, Payton accepts the penalty and makes it 3rd and 15. Is that your play?
Not even close to Kubiak's worst decision on the day. How about the end of the first half? Texans are up 16-7 and have gotten into the red zone four times already, frequently with big plays. Saints throw a middle screen on 3rd-and-long to get the ball to the 18 or so with about 1:15 left. Texans have two timeouts, and instead of taking one and trying to drive for more points to end the half, they let the Saints run down the clock and kick the FG, then on the offensive possession they run the ball once and call it a half. Even more baffling when you consider that the Saints were getting the ball to start the second half. How about trying to score? This kind of **** is why Kubiak should be fired.

pretty sure going for it is superior to punting even if you don't want to kick the fg there but i could be wrong.

Agree with this. If you kick and miss that's almost a 20 yard penalty compared to just getting a touchback. It was a 4th and long and obviously you're hoping for a little better than a touchback (coaches sure do get better when they've got good players/players execute). Unless there was something about time and score that makes it obviously stupid it seems fine.

probably, but again they may have simply thought that the conditions gave them little to no chance of making the conversion

i think a coach would explain it as "We wanted to make Blaine Gabbert beat us"

Umm did the lions kick a field goal in overtime on 1st down?

He almost missed it, that worried about a fumble ?

if you think you're gonna struggle to convert the 4th down because of the pouring rain then it would seem that the other team might struggle to move the ball 70 yards.

sure, and then they'd say it's even more true for 80 yards, or 95, or whatever

i mean, the punt is probably bad, but i haven't thought about the decision much because i don't care. just wanted to point out that it was not as obviously bad as just looking at a box score line would indicate.

It would also seem like they might be more likely to have a flubbed play that results in a safety or a defensive touchdown the times you end up putting them in the shadow of their goal line. If the punter puts it on the 2 was it obviously stupid?

Just playing Devil's advocate but doesn't seem obviously stupid. Seems like a decision that can swing on some variables not something that couldn't possibly be right.

We were talking about taking time to run out the clock earlier. Looking at the SF/CIN gamebook, I noticed the following play:

4-17-SF 18 (:08) (Punt formation) A.Lee ran ob in End Zone for -18 yards, SAFETY.

Unfortunately, they left 2 seconds on the clock. Was this play on purpose, or was it a missed snap? If planned, is this the proper play to do in this situation? (SF was up 7 at the time.)

I think that situation is fun to discuss but it's certainly a very close decision compared to the other bull**** done in the league.
