Schwartz wants to be in the end of the year poll for biggest blunder. Punts down 14 with 6:35 left on NO territory on 4th & 13.

All coaches are the biggest pussies on 4th down its unbelievable. Belichick and Chip Kelly only coaches with balls

I think Del Rio went for it more than any other coach during his time as Jaguars head coach. If that tells you anything.

Schwartz is an idiot. Punting down by two scores and the possession before that he tries a 55 yard FG. FGs are no good in a game where both teams are going up and down the field at will. Terrible decisions in the 4th quarter by the Lions coaches and players.

OK heard people making fun of Garrett earlier but didn't know why. Just saw on NFL Network that Garrett iced his own kicker with :06 left on the playclock b/c he was worried they were rushing. Came to thread and enjoyed reading all the posts about it. Jason Garrett, confirmed insane.

So awesome of Whisenhunt to say after the game "I'm so glad they iced the kicker so we didn't have to." totally deadpan. Coaches need to be publicly humiliated for such terribleness more often.

yep.. the whole not using one of their two timeouts to run one more play or two. i dont understand these coaches and why they like to settle for 50 plus yards kicks.. norv turner did it too last week.

Well obviously that was horrific, too. But that crap happens fairly regularly. Not sure I've ever seen a coach ice his own kicker. I mean his WPA was -1.00 for the game. He should donate his ****ing check to charity this week.

It was so bad, even Tony Dungy pointed out how they had bungled the clock prior to icing their own kicker

When will they not ice the kicker? You can't ice a kicker if he knows the timeout is coming. I want a coach to not call the timeout in that spot.

I want a coach to walk over to the ref and say, "we're not calling a timeout here, because icing the kicker has no effect when the kicker knows the timeout is coming."

Icing is so ****ing lame. If the opposing coach (or in this case, Jason Garrett) calls a timeout prior to a FG attempt, the team kicking the FG should get to move up 5 yards and kick from there. Or 20. Something to stop this ****ing icing bull****.

No way the NFL catches on in Europe if they see one game where a kicker is "iced". They'd be like "WTF? What a stupid sport", then go put on a jogging suit.

I think it would be just as nerve-rattling when you're a kicker and you go out there expecting them to call a TO to "ice" and they don't.

europeans should love it, imo. they're already used to people who kick the ball being trained to pretend like they're hurt after every play

whats the point of icing the kicker
if anything i think it helps the kicker, especially outdoors
you just give them a practice shot so they can better adapt to the distance and weather

Steve Christie when he was kicking with the Bills said essentially this after he kicked a game-winner.

Is icing even a thing? I mean I get the theory, but is there any empirical evidence it actually works?

I feel like it's in the same category as "player X is a clutch kicker, player Y is not".

Basically the NFL is a copycat league and coaches put zero thought into what it is they actually do. Well, there needs to be 1 to buck the system. Then the other 31 follow, without question or even general understanding of what they are doing. They just do what everyone else does. Then get fired.

Oh, and anyone who dares do anything outside the box gets bombarded by the media. Media never asks a coach after the game "so why did you ice the kicker? Do you actually think giving him a practice kick is a good thing? Or do you just blindly do what everyone else does?"

Media doesn't question things that everyone does. Only stuff that stands out, because it's easy to notice and they are lazy.

This book covers "icing" in pressure situations.

There is a study out there suggesting that icing the kicker actually works. There have been concerns raised with this study, and the sample size isn't that large. I have not analyzed the issue in detail, so I don't have a fully formed opinion about it.

http://www.maa.org/mathland/mathtrek_11_15_04.html
(above link supports icing the kicker)

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...g.z/index.html
(above link supports that icing the kicker doesn't work and there was even a tiny increase in field goal percentage after icing)

I'd probably ice the kicker because it might help and I doubt it could hurt that much based on the data I have seen.
