I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that Mike McCarthy calls his own plays. His clock management and 4th down decisions are bad enough...but he actually tells Aaron Rodgers what to do??

Mind blown.

Do we want announcers just tossing out idiotic ideas for discussion?
Why not? Throw out the idea of kicking off in OT. Discuss it, and most importantly, discuss why it's a bad idea. I've seen it done before (iirc, Al Michaels sometimes throws out completely boneheaded ideas that Collinsworth shoots down. I remember he actually suggested punting when down by a touchdown with 2 minutes left and Collinsworth immediately said that was a stupid idea.)

But you're right that we'd need non-idiot announcers, because the current announcers might say it's a good idea.

The problem is that the current generation of players grew up listening to the old standbys like always punting on 4th and think that's the norm, leading to the next generation of announcers thinking and saying the same thing.

Well then, I guess the coach's job is to placate the fans first (thus keeping and increasing interest) and winning is second.

Or, perhaps we just don't agree on what a color analyst is suppose to do. I suppose your guess is as good as mine.

What people ITT are saying is, because of the built-in, captive audience, what harm is there if an announcer says something that is "different?"

Small example from yesterday. HOU @ NYG. NYG is up 30-17 with 1:49 left on the Houston 42. 3rd and 6. They run a play, get a 2 yard gain, Houston calls the last time out. Of course, NYG sends out the punting team. With that big of a lead, there was no harm in that, which is probably why no one is mentioning it here. Announcers didn't even think twice about it.

But harm would occur if the color announcer says, right when Houston calls a time-out, "this would be a perfect place for NYG to go for it. If NYG converts the 4th down, NYG only has to kneel 3 times to end the game. But even if they fail to convert, HOU is still a long shot at winning. It's the same as the infamous Colts/Pats 4th down that the Pats failed at." Then they could debate "momentum" and the psychology of going for it. Even if the announcers just end up saying "yeah, that's a bad idea," why not put that spark of wonder in the viewer's head--that maybe you don't always punt on 4th down. Why not debate it? They had an entire time out to talk about it. What else are they going to talk about?
Agree.

Not even close, that was a 6 point game vs a team they couldn't stop offensively. Clear go for it situation (in our world anyway). They give up a TD for sure if they punt, against any other QB in the league they would've gotten the ball back too (indy had to purposely go incredibly slow there so NE didn't get it back themselves). NE could've let them score I guess, but boy would that have been tough to think of in that spot much less to get defensive players to actually do.

Vs a 2 min left game up 2 scores vs the lol texans.

I feel like punting is slightly correct over going for it there.

fyp

I'm 100% sure that's happened to multiple coaches.

btw, people (participants/bosses/fans/whoever) get furious when announcers criticize so based on that I think you shouldn't do that as a commentator, just explain what's going on and what the strategy is, but never criticize actual play or decisions no matter how lol they are*. Hence, some stupid sounding stuff sometimes.

hell a cub player got a commentator fired once because a guy in the clubhouse got butthurt over it.

*the super obvious ones everyone understands are ok, but still have to be semi careful about it

I probably agree with you on what I personally WANT the color analyst to do. But generally people who care a lot about proper strategy and actually getting it right (instead of just being told that their own thoughts are really smart) are the minority of viewers. If I'm an average fan and think that you should punt in that situation, and then the announcers come on and say you shouldn't, my natural reaction is going to be to disagree with them and call them bad announcers who don't know what they are talking about.

I watched an English Premier League game where the announcers were FANS of each team, who spent the entire game openly ragging on the other team and its supporters. It was really entertaining.

Fine, I'll accept that you're correct. I just threw it out there because I watched the game. But wouldn't it have been better for the color guy to say exactly what you just said instead of the play by play guy talking about what 60 Minutes or The Simpson is going to air that night?

no, because general fan doesn't want his brain to hurt while he's watching other people doing that. That's why they usually don't go beyond basics; and why it's awful to talk about poker strategy as a commentator or if you're at the table. Majority don't care/don't want to hear it.

Also his boss is telling him to promote whatever is on later and he likes his nice cushy no accountability high paying job watching games @ prime area.

Skins punted at halfway with 3 yards down 10 just after halftime, which is clearly bad but not threadworthy. But then they punted with 3 yards at own 27 at 45-14 late in the 4th. I know it's close to impossible to win at that point but come on

Eh I think down 4+ td's with like 5 minutes left you're kinda in "don't get any offensive players injured" territory

I bet we would never see a golfers name in here but I'm nominating Tom Watson for benching Reed/Speith after they only played 14 holes in the morning session. They are young. Im sure they can handle 72 holes in 2 days.

That was awful. It's like how Jamaal Charles always got benched averaging 7.2 ypc for Thomas Jones and his 3.7 gritty smart veteran yards per carry.

Spieth and Reed absolutely TROUNCED those guys and it was Ian Poulter, who is the metaphorical head of that team. They killed the head, let them kill the rest of the body.

Those 2 might be an elite pairing for years to come.

Fresno St converts a 1st down on the Lobo's 19 yd line (stopping the clock in college football) with 30 tics left in the half and two TOs. They spike.
