This was beyond terrible. Pretty much what happened is that they had 2 & 5, called for a run, got a 5-yard penalty and forgot to call a different play. Sigh...

That's acceptable in the NFL, where <40 is practically a gimme. But college kickers suck. Settling for 30 yarder cost Oregon their undefeated season (basically the same situation, less than a minute left, but 3 time outs) and cost Stanford a bowl game. Think they'll learn their lesson? Doubt it.

having the hashes wider in college is also a huge disadvantage for the kicker imo.

I think the end of regulation in the Stanford/OSU game was the most indefensible. You have Andrew Luck, a minute on the clock and 2 TOs (?) and you just sit on the ball. They ran the clock down so far that kicking it on 3rd down didn't even matter. And left TOs sitting on the bench. Inexcusable.

I really hate when a coach puts all the pressure on a freshman kicker rather than open himself up to attack on the off chance Luck throws an interception or something.

No one ever seriously blames the coach in these spots. So no.

Of course if Luck threw an INT we'd only here complaints about how it was dumb to risk it in the air when cOSU can't stop the run.

And what would you say if Luck fumbled the handoff? The only issue I can see with throwing there is the clock stops on an incomplete. I would not feel comfortable with 30 or more seconds remaining for Okie St.

Of course Luck was 27 of 31, so the chance of 2 incompletes was fairly remote.

Yeah, it's sad that none of the pundits on TV said a thing blamed the Oregon coach after their loss. I haven't seen much TV today, but nothing I saw blamed the Stanford coach either.

Commentators and pundits are largely ******ed. Wasn't there once a companion thread to this one, about commentators? I was watching a game the other day, can't remember what it was, and in the 4th quarter one team scores a TD to go down by 13. They line up for the 2PC and one announcer is like "Yeeeaaahhhh, I mean I guess you can go for two here, I don't really have a problem with it".

Hahawow. Hope you're trolling. The Cowboys couldn't stop anything. They were gassed. You have Andrew Luck. And a freshman kicker. And 2 Timeouts. And 53 seconds. And you

run. Twice. Then throw a super short pass.

Notre Dame had that situation last year with the reverse complaints. identical field position
Spoiler:
except we had a 3* 18 year old freshman instead of Luck.

3rd and 17 with 1:30 left in the first half at midfield. Beamer on defense does not call a timeout.

Turned out smart since Michigan parlayed three more possessions out of it.

Brutal by Hoke not calling a TO. Michigan up 3, just stopped VT on 3rd down in short FG range with ~40 seconds. Then he calls timeout to ice the kicker. Just awful.

Whitlock just tweeted

"No timeout by Hoke because he didn't want to tempt Va Tech into going for it. Also, Denard could throw a pick. #OTbetteroption"

I couldnt make that up if I tried. LOLnationalmedia

Beamer calls timeout on 4th and 1, then runs a fake punt when he has a 6'6'' qb who has been sneaking at will.

Hoke doesn't call timeout with :40 left.

Hoke settles for a 37 yarder.

Lots of other stuff that I'm forgetting.

The qb sneak ok 3rd and goal from the 20? At least try. Or just kick the fg on 3rd down.

It's been discussed in the Sugar Bowl thread, but I don't think Hoke's failure to call a timeout with 40 seconds was that bad. His biggest mistake was not using a timeout at like the 1:40 mark. Once Beamer went super conservative and was willing to settle for a game tying field goal, it was probably best to just take it to OT, especially with how poorly the offense had played and Denard's propensity to throw really bad interceptions.

To be fair, during last night's Sugar Bowl, the color guy criticized Stanford for settling for a FG in the Fiesta Bowl and was saying that VA Tech should go for the win instead of the FG to tie.
