The very early pace was fast but Epicenter was well off of that and ran 6 furlongs in 1:11. Nothing so crazy that would suggest a horse would be coming out of the clouds to run him down him.

The silver lining is that Rich Strike will be completely over bet in the Preakness (he should be 80-1 again but won't be) to create value on other horses.
The horse was 80:1. What do you expect, his PP's to look like Seattle Slew?

And those horses were crawling after the 45 2/5 half. The split between 3/4 and mile was 26 3/5. I can't recall ever seeing KD horses run that slow during a mid fraction split on a fast track. Pace had a lot to do with the finish.

Putting it into further perspective, Rich Strike's split time was 25 1/5, Epicenter's was 26. Epicenter got a breather but it was not enough to make a difference.

And no, Rich Strike won't be the favorite for the Preakness, likely around 6:1. The smart thing for the connections would be to skip it and train up to the Belmont Stakes, where he has a decent chance.

Sometimes 3YO crops aren't that good. I'd say this year is not that good, although I do like Epicenter quite a bit. He got blindsided at the end by Rich Strike and came back on a bit but it was too late.

still think it's crazy that the guy on the call basically didn't mention Rich Strike until 5 seconds before he won

Had dinner tonight with the ex-trainer's foreman who failed to call me with the $163 thing. "We're not on speaking terms," I informed her. "I did everything possible to keep this from happening, you sitting there with a winning long shot out of your arse and not getting it to me, yet that is exactly what happened." See she likes to pick Derby long shots just for fun, only day of the year I bet horses, so it's just a game.

I covered the unknown long shot coming in angle with a "no bet" on the grouped Big Four. +150 yipee.

It all happened like this. She texted me wanting to bet. I texted her back and said I'll call you in one hour as I had just been served lunch. Immediately the phone rings and it's her. She asks me to list the horses. Well, back in the old days when it was all done on phone you develop a pet peeve about stuff like that. You know, "List all the horses. Who's riding this one, who's riding that one, etc. Who's the trainer? What are the odds on so-and-so now? Who did you say the jockey was on so-and-so ....?" That's not how the world works, even then, but infrequent bettors don't see why not.

I snipped, not as bad as Rich Strike after the race but too much for her, I guess. When I indeed called her back she had went to school and listed off three long shots very quickly and efficiently. Wow. I'm shocked. Important point: she had switched some of her stuff around and I had my eye peeled in advance for anything she almost bet but didn't as a prime suspect for the money. So I am playing on the side emphasizing the ones she considered but eliminated, knowing there is going to be a trick to all this working. She never mentioned 163 at any time.

As soon as 163 hits the wire with as pure a finish as if foretold in the Old Testament, she calls and says, "that was the one I was going to add if you hadn't rushed me." And then, only then, she recited the whole story about the dude over in Versailles at the poker game, the last second entry, in particular replacing Lukas' horse, 30K claiming, something else in the story I forget. Bottom line, I attribute the missed big score to the fact that she called me back in seconds when I said I'll call you in an hour, whence upon she got miffed about me being snippy, then she legit didn't want to call back with the add on under that scenario. Voila ... what I expected in the beginning: a card trick/horse trick miss out, the very thing I was completely on my toes trying to prevent.

lol, that kind of reads like a Chilltown post. Were there any MMO characters harmed as part of that story or thoughts about Netflix adding titles about horses?

I don't follow horses closely, but that's a lot suspensions. Only jockeys I can think of being suspended somewhat recently are Irad and Paco Lopez, but not that many separate times in a short time. Sticking with the dirty horse choosing a dirty rider idea.
Quote:
The 32-year-old jockey is serving a four-day suspension for careless riding stemming from an incident during an April 27 race in Ohio. He will not be permitted to return to the racetrack until Friday.

It's Leon's fifth suspension since last September. The jockey has missed out on 32 race days since Sept. 15 as a result.
Quote:
Three of Leon's suspensions, including his latest one, have stemmed from accusations of careless riding. He also was served a suspension for "presenting false and altered documents from a physical examination" in West Virginia and "inflicting visible injuries on one of his mounts through misuse of the whip", according to the Louisville Courier Journal's Tim Sullivan.

"You do have to be aggressive to win," Leon's agent Jeff Perrin told Sullivan. "I think there are judgment calls that people make, and I don't want to comment on it too much for political reasons. But you have to be aggressive."

I'm shocked to hear about questionable activities in horse racing. Someone get ahold of Bob Baffert and see what he thinks.

How much time does a horse need to recover from the Derby? Or is that just an excuse and they just want RS in a longer race?

I think most horses only race about once a month. I know a lot of people think the 2 week turnaround is too short and want to change the dates for the triple crown races

Almost. They did show a race on the grass track a little over an hour ago.

I got #7 Reincarnate to P&S as my horse to screw up a lot of exotics. Mainly based on the jockey and a slow pace.

Gray horses always run better on a cloudy day.
