Back 4 picks itself for the most part.

Midfield:
Just let kante do kante things and free pogba + one other attacking mf instead of matuidi (tolisso or fekir.).

Front 3 of mbappe griezmann dembele(thauvin). GL dealing with that.

Instead they shackle their midfield 3 and just cross bot to giroud.
lol

Belgium have an all-time great generation for Belgium

France have (on paper) an all time great team OAT.

I agree that a if a few things went differently 2 years ago nobody would be talking about it, but I think it's relatively clear that Deschamps is not utilising this squad to it's best.

This French generation has played two tournaments in which they first went out to the WELTMEISTER and then lost the final in extra time. I'd slow down with the potentially win nothing talk.

Not sure about OAT but our Euro 2000 squad was pretty phenomenal iyam, 98 wasn't too bad.

The only argument against Deschamps that i'll accept is that he had the gays for lolevra.

Yup, it really doesn’t seem that hard either.

Similar to Belgium.

Zidane in before the tournament kicks off would be epic.

He’s going to finish his career comfortably among France’s top 3 all time goal scorers. But yeah, he’s so bad. Great take.

based on today he has ~0.000% chance of scoring 4 more goals for France

or anyone else really

that's why it's "potential"

They absolutely have done well the past two major tournies. But, it's kinda in that zone of let's see what happens as we've seen a lot of extremely talented French teams do something massively stupid in major tournaments. There is also the luck factor here and it being super high variance all things considered

You are totally overrating France and underrating Belgium here. This is not even close to an all time great French side. Maybe in the future. It's a young team full of potential but they aren't even top 2 in Europe on paper RIGHT NOW nevermind of all time lol.

Yes I read that word and thought about including it in my post. But if we bring this up after two tournaments where they didn't even underachieve, we can bring it up about all kinds of "generations" (which is a weird way to even use for big countries because turnover is usually huge).

I think everyone here knows the variance involved in winning a tournament.

The last statement wouldn't be true had Romania qualified

Last night Spain scrimmaged against Tunisia, which is a team a lot like Morocco, and looked terrible through 70 minutes. That's all normal and means nothing. Then yanked Silva and Rodgrigo, put in Costa, and Asensio, and a bit later yanked Alba for Aspas, to have only 3 defenders and something like two strikers and double pivot, and they scored a few minutes later when Costa made a run and tapped it back to Aspas. Point is simply that Lopetegui is capable of making adjustments and has chosen players to be able to play different styles in a way that might matter against these Morocco/Tunisias style teams (that are hard to beat).

I'd expect to see games where Spain plays 60 min in the standard boring Spain way, trying to control possession, hoping Silva or Iniesta creates some danger up front, and then, if it isn't working, attacks with much more verticality and some combination of Aspas/Costa/Asensio for the last 20-30 minutes.

BBC quiz today.

Can you name the players to score 10 or more World Cup goals?

8/13 here.

Spoiler:
Fontaine, Kocsis, Rahn, Cabillas and Lato Never heard of the latter 4 but I should have got Fontaine as you always see that he got it in 1 world cup.
