Ruud was a champ. Good understanding of tactics and strategy. Obviously great perspective from being a top player himself. Very knowledgeable about world football and players from all over which can sometimes be a big problem for the crappy American and British commentators/analysts. On top of that he was very articulate and in English no less. I only watched about 25% of their nightly shows and whatnot, but I'd watch 100% if it was just him without Alexi, Taylor Twellman, Mike Tirico, Julie WOAT Foudy, Gilberto Silva, etc.

WC 98 > 2006 >> 2010 = 2014 >>>>>> 2002

imo
a top-class final could make 2014 > 2010 though

You're out of your mind. 2010 was pretty awful.

2010 wasn't great but neither is 2014

2014 extremely poor after the round of 16, the 1-0 grind of germany vs france was the best game since then ffs

2010 had a topclass semi between germany and spain and a very close and exciting final where football triumphed in the end(a few great games earlier too like uruguay vs ghana for example)

You obviously define "best game" differently to most people because the germany 7-1 brazil was best game since then AINEC.

Also I'd agree that the 2014 knockout stage isn't any better than 2010, but the 2010 group stage was near unwatchable. 2014 much, much better.

the 7-1 was the worst semi i can remember
most disappointing game ever to anyone who wants exciting football and doesn't enjoy loling over crushed dreams of other people

+1

BRA-GER was pretty boring in the final 2/3 of the game. NED-ARG was more entertaining in this period.

1990 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> all other World Cups

Even if we ship this today, 1990 still better.

Spoiler:
Obvious childhood nostalgia is obvious.

1990 worst WC ever I am pretty sure.

I didn't think there was a whole lot of tactical interest in 2010 compared to other World Cups. That's one of the many awesome part of WC's, seeing the different styles and systems clash on the biggest stage.

Maybe this is just my memory being flawed, but it seemed like ~ everybody, and certainly all the best teams, played 4-2-3-1 in 2010. This WC has seen a ton more 3-man defenses than I ever remember seeing, and it just generally seems like more tactical variation.

Although I agree that the knockout stages have been disappointing overall after such a great group round. Hopefully we get a classic final today.

agree that the KO phase has disappointed this year, but it's still been pretty easily the most entertaining WC I've seen since 86. Rooting hard for a bit of Messi magic tonight to cement 2014 as one of the greats.

Achieved without winning a single match, too. Impressive.

'90 and '94 were the worst finals I can recall.

Well I think it is safe to say that ESPN got some extreme fps for the final. I think I've seen every single analyst and host they've brought in today already except Roberto who is back at Everton. Every time they come back from commercial they have a different assortment of people.

Took a look at expected goal differential vs. actual goal differential for each country. As a way to measure, you know, which countries have been awesome vs. which have wildly disspointing.

SPOILER ALERT: LOL Brazil
