I don't think intelligence is a large determinate of success as a manager - you probably don't need anything more than being smarter than the players.

It's obviously all about leadership. However, the problem is most people vastly overrate their ability to manage people, and I'd expect Barton has a particular blind spot in this area.

He'll probably last as long as it takes him to start shoehorning Nietzsche into his half-time team talks.

I could see him being a decent coach - running drills and barking at people - but not the guy in overall charge.

I'm not protecting him or defending any of the things he's done, they were the actions of a scumbag.

All I'm saying is that he has come across as an intelligent person when I've listened to him speak since he's been more prominent in the media lately and if he can curb his self-destructive streak (as he did when he was with us), that he could make a good manager.

I'm not sure what's too controversial about that.

TP I'm not sure where you're getting the impression that he comes off well. Im in the camp that there is not enough evidence to suggest that the personality trait of impulsiveness has a negative correlation with intelligence.
At the same time Im guessing that being very high on impulsiveness has a negative correlation with being a succesful football manager.
