I was explaining to someone why Bairstow had to appeal as a new ball was due so it's a free review. Then it turns out that you don't get your reviews back for the 3rd new ball -what's that about? Makes no sense.

Typically the ball will travel around 55-58 feet to get to the batsman, depending on length and batsman's stance, and those extra three or four inches or so are nothing in comparison, in the order of 0.5% of the distance travelled, equivalent to perhaps a couple of tenths of a mile per hour; even the most consistent bowlers will have larger natural variation in their speed than that anyway. To think that getting fractionally closer is going to make the difference is just absurd.

The extra runs are just that, extra runs to the opposition. Freebies. And the demoralising effect on the whole fielding team of a "wicket" off a no ball, particularly on a graveyard of a pitch like this one, is certainly not worth it.
