XVI FINA World Championships
The Americans end the eight-day meet
in the pool with 23 medals overall, including 8 gold, 10 silver and 5 bronze. The United States was the top country in the medal standings, and was awarded the FINA cup for its efforts.
The top performer at the Championships? An American, of course, Katie Ledecky
The 18-year-old won five gold medals (this gives her nine total when added to the four she won at the '13 Worlds in Barcelona .. Ledecky is an incredible 9-for-9 in world championship swims).
At the tender age of 15, this American phenom crushed the hopes of the host Brits by defeating U.K. world record holder Rebecca Adlington to win Olympic gold in the 800-meter freestyle. Tears were shed throughout London pubs as a result.
Ledecky's next stop? GOAT USA#1 Stanford University for studies and additional world-class swim training. Expect more big things from this American supernova in Rio.
