Round 4

I wasn't planning on adding another sculpture to my collection, but with architecture ruled out, I had some space on my team. Plus, there was some sick VALUE on the board, and an opportunity for my team to capture some representation of the EAST, specifically the most magnificent work of non-architecture Eastern art. In the Gates of Hell, the thinker there is looking down on, what, 170 or so figures? That's neat. The Thinker in my time capsule is going to be looking down on this:

Spoiler:

The Terracotta Army

Consisting of more than 8000 soldiers, plus hundreds each of chariots, horses, acrobats, musicians, etc., it's one of the greatest achievements in sculpture in human history. Commissioned by China's first Emporer, Qin Shi Huang, each figure is individualized in intricate detail using both clay and paint.

Many of the soldiers have not yet been uncovered so as to preserve the paint, which currently would flake off in short order when unearthed.

So, while you can't take the Eiffel Tower, I'm taking these guys, who occupy several football fields' worth of space.

Not tryin' to be a hater but I've thought about that for three rounds and every time I think about it I resolve that ain't nobody wants to stare at thousands of wack toy soldiers that don't even have movable limbs and aren't even in a feasible military formation, unless the formation's goal is to straight up die to literally any volley of any projectile of any kind, fired with any competence whatsoever.

I've seen Terracotta Warriors in person. It's definitely something where the pics don't do it justice and pretty awe inspiring.

I of course respect the pick as a value pick regardless.

I have made note of this and will plan to avoid drafting the Terracotta Army in the Military Forces in Human History draft.

Round 5

I'm kinda going to mail this write up in. Anyway, as much as our intellect is integral to our highest aims as humanity, humor is much of what makes us truly human. We see chimps and even birds exhibit signs of intelligence to the point of using tools to acquire food, but we know of no other species that has a sense of humor. Humor is not only integral to our daily lives but also as a tool to philosophize and bring truth to power in a "safe" manner. Ulysses employs humor to a great deal, but I want to emphasize humor for its own sake more heavily and in a more direct manner in my time capsule.

A concrete example of humor that spans cultures and eras is dramatic irony, where the audience knows more about what the characters are saying to each other than they do. Hamlet is an exemplar of this, although it frequently uses dramatic irony to tragic rather than comedic effect, even though it does both. But I want to draft a pinnacle example of dramatic irony used to comedic effect, along with self-referential humor that would be funny even without as much of a cultural context or knowledge of other important artistic works. So, I pick:

- Crossing Brooklyn Ferry

How well this line from Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass places itself in it's own history. Thematically, of course, it refers to the universality within humanity and nature that Whitman was so concerned about, but historically it predicts how Whitman's work was almost a century ahead of its time in theme and content. Writing Leaves of Grass in the mid 1800's, Whitman explored sexuality, spirituality, individualism and class with an immensely lyrical voice, and American poets failed to come close to matching him until the likes of Creeley, Duncan and Oppen - post WW2.

Leaves of Grass was reworked and republished with occasional new works eight times in Whitman's life, fulfilling Hoya's earlier vision of showing the Angels the process of the creation and incredible labour behind the art itself, while also giving them the complete and beautiful finished product.

Here is a video of a hot chick named Alicia reading from Song of Myself, the focal poem of the collection, while being brought to orgasm with a vibrator. It seems unlikely that this video itself would be a reach in the 5th round, on the off chance we get to include our favourite recital, this pick just gets better and better.

Quote:
This is what you shall do: Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body. . . . . . . .
The poet shall not spend his time in unneeded work. He shall know that the ground is always ready ploughed and manured . . . . others may not know it but he shall. He shall go directly to the creation. His trust shall master the trust of everything he touches . . . . and shall master all attachment.
Quote:
The known universe has one complete lover and that is the greatest poet. He consumes an eternal passion and is indifferent which chance happens and which possible contingency of fortune or misfortune and persuades daily and hourly his delicious pay.
Pretty much the greatest poetry of all time.

Quote:
What is it then between us?
What is the count of the scores or hundreds of years between us?

Whatever it is, it avails not—distance avails not, and place avails not,
I too lived, Brooklyn of ample hills was mine,
I too walk’d the streets of Manhattan island, and bathed in the waters around it,
I too felt the curious abrupt questionings stir within me,
In the day among crowds of people sometimes they came upon me,
In my walks home late at night or as I lay in my bed they came upon me,
I too had been struck from the float forever held in solution,
I too had receiv’d identity by my body,
That I was I knew was of my body, and what I should be I knew I should be of my body.
Anyone who's never read the whole book should definitely do so, but if you want to pick out one poem, for me it's definitely Crossing Brooklyn Ferry.
