65% completion
254 passing yards 1 pass TD 1 rushing TD
Game winning drive (his 4th in 12 games started)
  • Has 4 out 5 new OL
  • 3 new RBs
  • 3 new TEs
  • 2 new WRs
  • He fumbled one ball that was on him - shoulda protected it better. Oh well.
  • Another was a fumbled snap from his new center who Allen is playing his first game with - including preseason.
  • Two tipped passes - one off the hands of Beasley. Fluke.
  • The other batted up in the air.

Down 16 points, Allen led the Bills on 3 straight scoring drives.
In the 4th quarter, he was 8/10 for 102 yds, 1 TD rushing, and a passer rating of 142.5.

So, this is what I think about your opinion of a quarterback - and a game - you obviously did not see:

I'm probably going to fail to convey this properly. But here goes anyway.

I have this theory based on first hand experience with tennis and pool and watching other sports intently - that sometimes you can get in a sick groove where everything seems super easy, especially early in your progression in the sport. During this early moon shot - your mechanics and fundamentals are far from perfect, but you're just completely feeling it and bursting with that confidence that only comes from never going through a soul-rattling slump.

I used to show up to play tennis and was just dropping it on a dime wherever I wanted with my shitty self-taught form. But then it wouldn't work the next time. I finally took some lessons and realized how far off I was from proper technique. I tried to completely retool but my tennis partners got tired of me hitting it into the net. So I just decided to stay with my crappy form. The funny part is once I learned proper form, I never had confidence in my shitty form again. My backhand, which sucked - got a little better. But my forehand, which I swear used to be pretty good, got worse.

I've seen the same thing at pool, where I do know some form. My friend would start running the table w/o lining the ball up much or following through - just feeling it. And I'd just wait for him to miss and get frustrated that his magic is over.

I'm not saying Jackson is in that groove. But when I see him throw passes like that big one he hit to Hollywood - w/o being really set - I wonder how repeatable they are - year in/year out. Honestly I wonder the same thing about Mahomes too. I have faith in him to figure out what's needed to be consistent for the long haul - but a big slump at some point wouldn't shock me.

Cutlahh used to throw off his back foot all the time - until that didn't work anymore. Cutlahh is a perfect example of someone I did not have faith in to get through the slump and figure out whatever it takes for him to be solid and repeatable.

Maybe this is the new wave and solid robotic footwork and mechanics don't matter as much anymore. Or maybe they do.

Again - I'm not trying to bash Jackson and obviously he's already gone through a lot last year, so it's not like he's still in some confidence bubble phase. This is more just about QBs who don't look that fundamentally sound - including Mr. All-World - and my curiosity if this is sustainable.

Titans beat the Browns bad, instantly it’s “LOL Browns and Baker sucks.” Until he throws for 5 TDs next week or something, and then he’s the GOAT. There’s no understanding that football is hard and sometimes you get beat. Hell sometimes you get beat bad.

The game day thread used to be fun, but now it’s just “so-and-so sucks” over and over. For three quarters everyone was calling Kyler a bust, but then he leads a comeback and he’s not, I guess? It’s boring.

But it’s still fun every now and then...like today lol.

Suzzer, mechanics and repeatability definitely matters, and will be a QBs saving grace, or not, when things get tough.

Jameis really ****ed up what was an otherwise incredible weekend for black quarterbacks

(I’m giving Kyler a pass mark given it was game 1)

Going to make a regular season thread in the next hour or so.

OP will be pretty light but will at least condense conversation for somewhere to go between week 1 and week 2.

I will read the second half this later, but he bolded the names of a bunch of QBs who suck and went back to the well of comparing rookie passer rating (is this just the old QB rating metric?) when everyone knows there is rampant inflation in league passing efficiency.

Comparing anyone's first 150 passes today to Stafford let alone Peyton is outrageous. Lamar would have been 25th in ay/a if he qualified last season which is the stat the article used. So people were not wrong to say he was bad, although obviously he is young and can get better.

yeah i'm pretty sure sharp was being weirdly disingenuous on twitter RE that article when a ton of analytics guys were making what seemed like pretty damn valid criticisms of it. it was a whole thing for a day on twitter

i normally like his stuff a ton so the lack of engagement was disappointing

He actually had a better completion % for the first three quarters - 65% - than he did for the 4th - 64%.

Like I said, you boxscore jockeys don't know the whole story but love flapping your gums about stuff of which you have no clue.

They hired Mike ****ing Tannenbaum as their “NFL Front Office Insider”. Think that’s all we need to know about their NFL reporting capabilities.

Do you get the irony of using a stat about completion percentage to argue he’s a good QB and then calling me a ‘box score jockey!’

I watched way more than half the snaps of that game on game pass yesterday and just like last year, he’s just not an accurate passer and he hasn’t yet showed consistent ability to make good decisions. Maybe that comes but I’m sorry Dom, right now your QB sucks

It is silly not to adjust for era, but we have plenty of evidence of really bad 21-year-old rookie QBs who become successful. Alex Smith and Jared Goff had two of the worst QB seasons of all time at age 21; one ended up being a starter for like 14 years and the other made the Pro Bowl in his second and third seasons.

More in terms of details of QB play and not sheer numbers, a lot of people have been saying Lamar can't pass, especially deep, and sure, Hollywood getting so open against a bad Miami team (who still has a lot of talent in the secondary for the record-- Xavien Howard, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Reshad Jones) helps, but the passes themselves were on point, perfect spirals delivered with the right amount of touch and to the right spot. They were not the passes of someone who "isn't a passer" or "can't throw deep."

Miami quit. Full stop.

No point in drawing any conclusions from that game.
