It makes no difference obviously but it's a free kick (and a red card either way).

Lawro displaying an impressive lack of knowledge of the rules though. If the foul had continued into the area then it's a penalty, it makes no difference where the initial contact was.

This is the correct rule, but it looked to me like all the contact occurred outside of the area (or at least any contact that would be considered a foul) so I think free kick is the correct decision.

One was a tackle with some sort of attempt made to play the ball, the other was a push with no attempt to play the ball. It actually only matters if it would also be a penalty though, if the foul in the Denmark vs Croatia game was outside of the box it would have been a red card.
