Chris Dodd has been in for a tough reelection challenge for some time, but nobody thought any metal chairs would get thrown. That all changed today when Linda McMahon, co-founder CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, jumped into the cage.

She'll compete in the GOP primary, where former Rep. Rob Simmons is the accepted frontrunner and holds a significant lead over Dodd in head-to-head general-election polls. From McMahon's announcement press release:
Quote:
"I have spent the past 30 years growing what began as a 13-employee small business into a publicly traded, global entertainment company that now provides over 500 jobs here in Connecticut. I understand what it takes to balance a budget, create jobs and grow the economy," said Linda, a co-founder and former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, Corp. (NYSE: WWE). "Washington is out of control, and sadly, Senator Chris Dodd has lost his way and our trust. I can't sit by on the sidelines anymore knowing that I have both the experience and the strength to stand up to special interests and bring badly needed change to Washington."

Dude...Al Franken is a Senator.
09-16-2009 , 01:23 PM
But he can draw a map of the US from memory. Surely he is qualified.
09-16-2009 , 01:35 PM
I dunno. Al Franklin never struck me as ludicrously as this does. Don't know why.
09-16-2009 , 03:53 PM
I dunno. Their "public" stock is fake since they have majority control but she has a point about running a successful business. Everyone else is in politics because they can't run ****.
09-16-2009 , 03:56 PM
Her purpose is to Ross Perot the Republican frontrunner.
09-16-2009 , 06:48 PM
Damn, $25 Million dollars? Schiff is so screwed.
09-16-2009 , 07:51 PM
He's supposed to announce tomorrow morning on Morning Joe. I'd say it's about a certainty that he's running, as I got my copy of Crashproof 2.0 from Amazon today, and in the introduction he specifically mentions "I'm running for Senate in the state of Connecticut."
09-17-2009 , 01:04 AM
Rand Paul will be on Morning Joe as well.
09-17-2009 , 09:42 AM
Schiff killed during his announcement, as he usually does.

He's a big dog obv, but even in losing I still think his candidacy is a great platform to get his message out (similar to RP during his Presidential run)

Will be shipping him some $$$$ shortly.

Peter Schiff: stock up on supplies, necesseties, and alcohol and cigarettes for batering

Peter Schiff is advising stock up on food and supplies as well as cigarettes and alcohol for bartering. Also says he hopes our economic collapse is not as bad as the Soviet Union's and states start breaking off.

I love this guy and this is the most doom I have heard from him yet and I have to agree with him.

I don't know too much about Schiff outside of his youtube videos and some other stuff, but I assumed since he runs a company with a fancy name that he is worth in the 8 figures area.

I'd say Schiff is probably worth several million dollars (I have no idea how to value a brokerage business), but he certainly isn't going to have the deep pockets that a Linda Mcmahon or Mitt Romney type could produce. Certainly he'll spend some of his own money but in order to be competitive it's going to take a Herculean fundraising effort.

Mish made a post today I Endorse Peter Schiff For Senate

Quote:
I wholeheartedly endorse Peter Schiff for Senate.

To understand why, in spite of previous differences between us, please consider the following compelling case, starting with a look at government bailouts, the moral hazards of too big to fail, the current rise in the stock markets, and the "great government advance" of corporate welfare and bailouts at taxpayer expense.
Quote:
It's time to put a stop to this madness. The only way to do that is to throw the bums out. If you want more government intrusion, corporate bailouts, and fascism, then vote for Chris Dodd.

If you want sound money, less government intrusion, and an end to corporate bailouts and fascism, please Support Peter Schiff and for the same reasons please Support Rand Paul in his campaign as Senator from Kentucky.

It's as simple as that.

I hope Schiff is ready for the third degree treatment he is going to get from both the "left" and "right" sides of the media, as well as both parties.

Just think about it... this guy is running on a "capitalist/freemarketer/low taxes etc" platform... and will Wall St, Fannie/Freddie/GS, as the rest of the financial industry be giving their contributions to him... or his opponents? I had a conversation along these lines over dinner with a few Democrat Dodd supporters... their heads were spinning.
09-23-2009 , 10:22 PM
Definitely his opponents. I guarantee it. 1000%.

Absolutely this. If you are or have the potential to become a bailout queen, who would you throw your campaign contributions to?
09-23-2009 , 10:56 PM
I really hope Schiff's campaign gets some publicity, because the fact that the financial/securities/banking industry hates him is really a game breaker when you argue with people who think they don't like him. No joke, I have had the same conversation/ friendly argument with people who started out hating Schiff for being such a low taxing free market bastard... but when they find out that he gets no money from the financial industry, who happens to be Dodd's biggest bankroller... the wheels start turning in their head. People actually have no frame of reference for it.

The media is going to utterly crap on him. They are going to take every little awkward thing he says out of context to make him look like a lunatic, and never give him the chance to coherently state his platform and beliefs.

But at least they are going to be fair and apply equal hostility to his opponents and Dodd, ie spotlight the bad things Dodd has done, like be a "Friend of Angelo".

If he was a bricklayer and this was true, then **** no he shouldn't be voted a Senator. If someone is a failure in their chosen profession, then why the hell should we trust them to make decisions on our behalf. I know that we end up electing idiots anyway, but this is a pretty strong strike against Schiff in my mind. Shame because his arguments make alot sense and would be an improvement on what we have in office, but the fact that he lost so much money for his clients suggests that he luckboxed into his predictions and is not as smart as he thinks he is. I mean he costs his clients gobs of money in taking of advantage of run-up during the bubble, and when his time to shine finally came he shat himself just as bad as everybody else

That said, I would vote for him if he ran in my state because he would probably be less of an idiot than the people running against him.
