The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: No smocking guns. The Presidency of Donald J. Trump: No smocking guns.

In other news, the Trump admin discussed sharing citizenship info from census with law enforcement despite that being explicitly illegal. To be fair, the discussion was in response to a question from a lawmaker asking if they planned to do this, but the horrifying result of said discussion was "let's say as little about this as we can to keep it open as a future possibility":

Quote:
The subject came up after a Democratic lawmaker asked whether responses to the survey could ever be shared with law enforcement agencies, something that has been strictly illegal according to federal law governing the census.

After a congressional hearing in May about the citizenship question, Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) submitted a written query about whether the Justice Department agreed with a memo it had issued in 2010 saying the USA Patriot Act could not override the confidentiality of the census.

In a June 12 email, department officials discussed among themselves how to answer Gomez’s question in a way that left the answer open. Justice Department attorney Ben Aguinaga suggested to acting assistant attorney general John Gore that they not say “too much” in response to Gomez’s question, in case the issue were to “come up later for renewed debate.”

What's the purpose of this fake charity thing with Whitaker? To hide the name of the person paying him? Some kind of tax evasion?

Looks like a scam for sure but I don't get how it works.

Issue the damn subpoena. C'mon!

Thing is, there are currently 36 sealed indictments in the DC District Court. Now, according to people in the know, that's definitely a good deal more than average (source: Paul Butler, former AUSA), but how many are Mueller's? Maybe 1, maybe 20. I hope Mueller drops an atomic elbow soon and unseals like 10 indictments simultaneously. While a hope is all it is, he's got something up his sleeve.
How does Muller subpoena Trump if he can't indict him? Can't Trump just say "**** off" to all his questions?

Presumably a court would find Trump in contempt. The judge might not issue a punishment in association with the contempt finding, but failure to respond to a direct court order would be grounds for impeachment. The Senate might not convict, but the midterms showed there could be a steep cost. If people want to complain that that's too weak, welcome to democracy, which is only as good as the will of those governed.

Nixon didn't "have" to turn over the tapes, but he did, and it was not out of the kindness of his heart.

I will never be convinced that the framer’s intended that a president was immune from criminal indictment. The Constitution is silent on the matter, which somehow magically means it’s impossible? Gtfo. Impeachment deals with kicking him out of office, not with criminal indictment

i wish someone in the press pool would have shouted out, as trump scoffed that time magazine has a "person of a year" feature and remarked on how it used to be "man of the year", to ask if he would want it to be made "man of the year" again

Donald Trump touts nonexistent $450 billion in Saudi orders and 1 million jobs
Trump said that Saudi Arabia has ordered $450 billion from U.S. companies, including $110 billion in military contracts, representing over a million jobs.

Orders on that scale don’t exist. There is no data behind the $450 billion, and the $110 billion is a blend of smaller deals in progress, old offers that have not come through, and speculative discussions that have yet to move forward.

Trump’s claims about jobs ignores the long runway between signed agreements and actual delivery and payment. He treats spending that could play out over a decade as if it were spent in one year. More importantly, if the $450 billion in orders is a mirage, the 1 million jobs is equally without substance.

The size and length of the GOP grift trough never cease to amaze. Jumbo Baby Whitaker getting $500K/yr for nothing, sure! Nothing to see here.
