A reminder where we were last Presidency

President Obama put his foot on his desk in a White House photo, and although it admittedly does look a little cheesy, people are outraged over the leader of the free world placing his foot atop the Resolute Desk because it’s undignified and beneath the office of the president… although technically it’s in the office of the… the point is, people are not happy.

There's a huge glut of guns now, too, a lot of companies ALSO thought Hillary would win so they seem to have overbuilt their inventories.

You can get a nice mid-range AR-15 for like $600 these days, the market has totally crashed.

lol @ Ben Sasse getting the vapors. Obviously Trump is a crude imbecile but as always, gutting health care for the non-wealthy is the civil conduct of good government servants like Sasse, but Trump's cruel tweets about the TV show host is BEYOND THE PALE, Mika shall not be besmirched.

Say what you will about Trump, at least he's a completely transparent sociopath as opposed to the Senate GOP who **** all over human dignity as a matter of course but play nicely on the TV talkeys and on the Twitters.

It’s depressing. But it’s true.

Why is it depressing? It's literally been true all along. It's only depressing if you ever thought it was otherwise.

Like Thiessen, I want to see a better, more decent conservatism drive the Republican Party. I don’t want to believe that this is the bottom line of GOP policy thinking. But this is clearly the bottom line of GOP policy thinking.
It's been that way since forever! They're doing exactly what they did during the Bush years! Cut spending for the poor and cut taxes for rich people while demonizing minorities (gays for Bush, Muslims and Mexicans for Trump). The Republicans have been this way literally since Ezra was born. It feels like an abusive relationship where Ezra just hopes someday the Compassionate Realist Conservative Father will come back from buying the cigarettes they left to go get in the 1960s.

The unfortunate truth of modern American politics is that most of the liberals and the elites in the Democratic Party and in the media are the mythical Compassionate Conservatives that they're constantly grasping around for but can never find. Liberals even make that point consistently by pointing out our left party is rather centrist on the global left/right dichotomy. The fetish of people like Ezra to search in vein for a cerebral compassionate conservative to have a civil debate with is probably some form of Freudian defensive narcissism, the understandable aspiration of people who simply want to talk amongst themselves but simultaneously hold themselves out to be far more than they really are.

Glib ldo but like Hillary Clinton is the better, more decent wing of the Republican Party

This is sort of reminiscent of fin-de-siecle Germany or some other half-constitutional monarchy, where they have an inbred moron as the nominal head of the government, but there's also a powerful professional bureaucracy that's actually running the government. The dynamic is that the bureaucracy is trying to run a regular foreign policy but is constantly being derailed when one of Kaiser Wilhelm's drinking buddies convinces him that they should be allies with the UK and he then upsets the diplomatic balance of power by ranting about the subject at a state dinner or something.

Main difference I guess is that we elected the inbred moron for some reason. I'm sure this will end well.

Could you imagine how well the undeserving poor would be able to abuse social service programs if they had armies of high-paid, over-educated attorneys, accountants and other random professionals they could dedicate to maximizing their food-stamp benefits similar to how wealthy people do to minimize their tax burden?

thats more their policies than their stereotypes. its clear that they wanna cut taxes. its not because they care so much for the rich, they probably dont give a damn about the rich (except some corrupt politicians). its more that they cant stand cheaters or undeserving ppl to receive benefits. for us on the left the cheaters are more the rich ppl that are taxed "too low".

i wouldnt fall for such simplistic world views that charicatures are "correct". the world is alot more complex than that.

I recall a long article a little while back dreaming about the good old days when civilized folk like Buckley and Goldwater were the heads of the party

Your depiction is absolutely correct for my parents. They don't have any affinity for rich people, and they're certainly not rich, but they fume at the idea of a single undeserving person getting government benefits.

It would actually be much better and less morally corrupt if their politics stemmed from self interest rather than animus towards the poor.
