Who is the greatest president of the 20th century? People who say it is that dickbag Reagan are the likeliest to be lolRepublicans.

Taxes on the rich, should we return 'em to Clinton-era levels?

Republican: hurr durr jerb kreators?!

Democrat: Yes. And maybe kill one or two as an example to the others. *fistbump gesture*

Obviously you can't ask are you republican or democrat, or who did you vote for, thanks low key.
When confronted with a political question, do you form your opinion on the basis of reason, facts and expert opinion or on the basis of your gut feelings and/or the opinions of close friends and family?

Do you want the government to work for you, or everyone?

How many non-operative vehicles are present where you live?
12-16-2012 , 09:07 PM
So you have any elevators in the area that houses your vehicle(s)?

"What are your thoughts on welfare?" or something similar is probably one of the best possible answers.

I thought of a similar question (who was a better president, Reagan or Clinton?) but that's really just a proxy for "Are you a Republican or Democrat?". We should ban any question that asks about politicians or political parties.

I think a question about unions is likely best. With the Dems its hard to pick a question that picks up both the immigrant/minority Dems and the rich urban liberal Dems. GOP seems like it should be easier because their base is so homogenous, but I can't come up with anything good.

How would this distinguish between Republicans and Democrats? 100% of both would answer that they decide on the basis of reason, and 90% of both would be wrong about that.

PVN,

I would absolutely love a PVN's political philosophy OP.

Because in 48,000 posts you have shown incredible skill at never, ever actually affirmatively stating what you think would be good policy. I mean, we get it: GOVERNMENT BAD. But seriously, what is your plan for:

exploding health care costs
gun violence
stagnant middle class income
deficits/the debt
education (primary and secondary)
too big to fail banks

No semantics. And no 'this guy's plans suck.' What is your plan. Details please.

Good question! A few points to consider... first, the "other" category is huge, as something like 2/3 of peeps aren't registered Rs or Ds. And of those who are registered members, Ds outnumber Rs by about 3:2.

A second thing to consider is that, just like any other hierarchical organization, the leadership is always going to be much more conservative than the rank and file. Historically, this is especially true right now, as the Ds leadership is effectively what the Rs used to be, and the Rs leadership is off somewhere in a never-never land where some rapes are 'legitimate'.

The first consideration, makes me think that questions focused on the Rs policy positions will be most effective in getting an accurate breakdown. That, and the historically shrill and extreme nature of some recent policy positions of the Rs, which would make them more likely to register a response in your average USAian today.

This second consideration leads me to think that questions that turn on the Rs recent social issues, such as their war on women, war on voting, etc won't be very effective in getting an accurate breakdown. The reason being the rank and file Rs, not being as conservative as their leaders, don't all hold these views.

Issues such as the war on immigrants, welfare, and even to a lessor degree unions, also might not work as well. Not only are a significant minority of rank and file Rs going to again be to the left of their leadership, but also a significant minority of rank and file Ds, and a significant amount of that pesky majority of "others" are going to be on the Rs leaderships side here also.

Instead, I think the two real "wedge" question issues here are the Rs war on the earth, and foremost, their rich business owners uber-ales policies.

And I would ask an open-ended question instead of one with a yes/no answer. That way I can tell a whole lot more just by how someone phrases their answer, maybe more so than what their answer literally is. I nominate...

So... how can we stop those dirty tree-huggers from obstructing our hard working job creators?

So far, the question with the largest partisan difference in polling that I have found is whether or not the responder has a positive or negative image of the federal government. 75% of Democrats and 25% of Republicans have a positive image.
