I don't have an issue with using deadly force in this scenario, but 46 shots seems a little excessive.
08-18-2012 , 09:04 AM
What's the ideal number then?

Bear in mind this was spread out between 6 cops, so we're really discussing ~8 shots/cop.
08-18-2012 , 09:20 AM
Obviously there isn't an ideal number because every situation is unique.

Do you think he's still posing a threat after the subject has clearly been shot and is on the ground? It's tough to say based on sound, but imo roughly 20 shots were fired while the dude was no longer reasonably a threat.
08-18-2012 , 09:22 AM
Why no taser attempt or was that just not mentioned?
08-18-2012 , 09:29 AM
If he's on the ground, then he's not a threat with a knife.

It appears they were merely following him to the ground though.

Also 40:46 is an excellent ratio for one of these standoff shootings, so gotta give credit to their training division there.

A crazy dude with a knife gets no taser.

To give a technical answer, a taser is out of range.
08-18-2012 , 10:49 AM
I don't doubt that the police officers have their own safety in mind.
08-18-2012 , 10:59 AM
So you want some cop with a taser to charge toward the dude with the knife or what?

I'm confused.
08-18-2012 , 11:18 AM
They have tasers that can hit a target in short range.
08-18-2012 , 11:30 AM
Case Closes, IYO what's the effective range of a taser?
08-18-2012 , 11:52 AM
Depends on the taser. Looks like they don't have any tasers with range.

But taser.com has some sweet tasers though.

This one is semi-automatic with a lazer sight. Not finding range at the moment. But any reasonable taser gun could have hit this guy. They seemed close enough in the video I saw.

N, where N <46. Still, my jimmies remain unrustled by this.

Case, they didn't have special super tasers. The tasers they had were X26c's with a max effective range of 15 ft.

Oh, should have used those then. They did try to use mace, but that did not work out.
08-18-2012 , 12:22 PM
Ah, that further explains it.

When you pepper spray someone then tase them, they often catch fire.
08-18-2012 , 12:42 PM
That makes sense. Did not know that was a thing.
08-18-2012 , 01:08 PM
Yea, we had a big flap about it at our agency. A lot of pepper sprays are oil based. Some are water based. We went from oil based to water based to reduce that risk.

Oh and water based is so much nicer. It'll still make most people curl up in a ball and cry, but at least it washes out fairly quickly.

this sounds a lot cooler than just shooting the guy

JFC dudes. I don't know the specifics of this particular situation but "crazy dude with knife" has got to be pretty high up on the list of scenarios where shooting is probably the way to go.

On the other hand, the cops probably did botch SOMETHING here.

Downside of it (other than the fire LDO) is that it seems to "drip" more than the oil. When you take a shot with oil based, it stays around your face.

Water based goes all down your chest and if you're really unfortunate or inexperienced in how to decontaminate, that **** will roll right on down to your balls when you shower.

Isn't that really just another "crazy dude with a knife" story?

Oh I thought that was the story you guys were talking about.

Anyway, the point I was getting as is that even if shooting the guy was justified, the cops still can manage to find a way to botch it up.
