Dvaut illustrated quite nicely that this is true for all of America, so don't go thinking your 'side' or whatever is super awesome.

oh well never mind. as soon as I got suspicions at the awesome wit displayed and googled that phrase it shows up in a ton of lefty blogs, forums, and op-eds.

I didn't claim it to be original, just that it's funny. I really love that pvn has embraced the Tea Party ethos with such vigor that he know trolls me by accusing me of "knowing things".

He's not so subtly accusing you of arrogance imo.

kool? What sort of nonsense false equivalence is this? What side am I even on? Is this another thing where I'm like "Man the Tea Party is full of ******s" and you're like "NOT EVERY ****** IS A TEA BAGGER I WIN THIS ROUND" because you don't understand how language works?

How many of that 47% not paying income taxes are paying taxes that come out of their wages?

Same link as above: When considering federal income taxes in combination with payroll taxes, the percent of households with a net liability of zero or less is estimated to be 24% this year, according to the Tax Policy Center's estimates.

Still high, but that seems like the more relevant number.

So 24% of households have no wages then. 10% unemployment and 14% seniors almost gets us there (yes I know not all the way, and ICY). Pretty much everyone else pays taxes. GG republitard talking point.

Unironically quoting Megan McCardle:

Quote:
But that doesn't mean we need to raise taxes on poor people; rather, it means they should have some skin in the game. Simplify the tax code, and expand the EITC into a negative income tax which then continuously scales into a progressive income tax up to some maximum . . . and then make it clear that new spending means that all the marginal rates go up a little bit. If you want a new project, you have to be willing to give up some of your EITC to pay for it. Not as much, percentage-wise, as Warren Buffet might pay. But no free programs.
This makes sense to me. Slide the rates each year to get a balanced budget.

There is no reason to "balance the budget" when you have a printing press. In fact they specifically don't want to do that because they are "targeting" 2% inflation.

Ummm no. People who are unemployed still make some money for the year. Very few people are unemployed for a year plus... I'm pretty sure UE benefits are taxable as well. What happens is that tax credits get to be greater than what you paid into SS/Medicare.

And I thought we were talking about income tax as well.

We were.

I am not sure why we should make such a strong distinction between income tax and payroll taxes. Can I ask (non-rhetorically) why that distinction is important in this type of discussion?
