I'm a purist so I will always believe in textbook techniques ultimately.

But I do believe unorthodox strategies work and are not necessarily bad.

It's like in Starcraft and you decide to go high risk/high reward with 6 pool/rush dts/drops etc etc.

I think comments are being a little too harsh and result oriented. Obviously Silva made some mistakes, but I don't hate the "hands down strat"

This is what he does in every fight. Part of what makes him "special".

Went to school with weildman
kicked my ass in arm wrestling
Very proud indeed, I actually thought Silva would knock him out but couldn't root against him so didn't bet any on the match

Great fight more than covered my ticket scam,

Weidman scared silva in the first with the takedown and GNP & sub attempts (the leg locks were very close and GNP was very different to Chaels). He went to showboat mode trying to put weidman off his game and it didn't pay off.

I stick by my pre-fight view that Weidman has the perfect style vs Silva, genuinely feel bad if any of you guys really did bet super heavy on the fight though.

Just_mo you were right on Gracie thought he'd use his reach far better than he did

Also Silva will be a different fighter after that loss, his style will be more conservative now he's been caught.

100% agree with everything kongofcool has said, and think making excuses for Anderson is ridiculous. (I was someone who said silva = free money lol)

we saw was that Andersons speed is superior and that he was able to figure out weidmans timing (but we already knew Anderson was a better striker)

We also saw, that weidman does have the power to KO silva if he hits him right (clowning around or not, he was out) and that Weidman is able to TD Anderson with ease.

However with the exeption of power, we already knew all that, and if there is a rematch.. We can expect much better odds. Also if there is a rematch we will know Anderson is 100% motivated

So I think Anderson will still be the bet (ESP with better odds) however I don't think we can take anything away from Weidman. He did exactly what he went out to do.

Hands down strat is actually good when you're facing wrestlers who dive for those takedowns. Problem was, AS was clowning too much.

Silva threw like 0 counter punches when they were just sitting there for him at will.
id take weidman's first round on the ground against AS than sonnen's.

Way more dangerous while with chael you know he needs 5 rounds to win no matter what.

And you can dominate someone on the ground without going for a submission or passing guard LOL what kinda follow up questions were those from aggy?

After seeing this, I would make Anderson an even bigger favorite. This wasn't a Serra/GSP KO by any stretch . . . but I still think it was a flukey result.

Rogan influenced -

"Progess, pass guard, he needs to progess and pass guard, I'd like to see him pass guard and improve his position"

These posts are pure gold. Silva got scared after getting taken down in the first round lol. Guess he didn't stuff Weidmans attempt in round two with ease. No excuses for Silva's performance tonight, like I said earlier I doubt anyone knows what was really going on in his head but the people who are saying he was scared of Weidman because of a take down are hilarious.

Anyone watching the postfight presser? Wanna see how Dana reacts to Andersons BS.

Usually I don't watch these but not every PPV do you see the GOAT end his 7 year reign by getting KTFO while he is clowning...

I don't see how anyone can see this fight as a positive for Silva,

Weidman got the takedown, took virtually no damage and got the KO finish. Silva did the showboating in desperation to get Weidman off his game.

Dancing may look good but it's not winning a fight.

Pretty much what elliott said. He only did that showboating because he realized early on if he committed to engaging, Weidman could get him to the floor. He stopped the takedowns because he stopped attempting to throw fight-changing strikes.

Weidman was stylistic poison for Silva, I said it from the start and it was proven correct. Every strength of his matches up with a weakness of Silva.

Been taken down before - Weidman is an excellent wrestler.
Been subbed before - Weidman is an excellent no gi grappler.
Likes to drop his hands and dodge strikes - Weidman hits really hard.

Yeah, guy's been the king since I've been following this sport.

That's why it's pretty cool for me to see Weidman make it to the top, because I've known about him since even before he got to the big show. Had seen his KO of fellow Northeast prospect Hall, knew about his credentials, was excited for his call up. True story, told my buddy "that might be the guy who beats Anderson Silva some day."

Thanks! Had him straight up and ITD so very good night.

Sad thing is I'm more happy about my views on the fight being correct than the unit gain.
